Job Title: Assistant Debate Coach FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summar y: The Assistant High School Debate Coach supports the Head Coach in
providing students with opportunities to develop public speaking, critical thinking, research,
argumentation, and teamwork skills. The assistant coach helps plan and lead practices, teaches
debate formats and strategies, assists students with research and preparation, and provides
constructive feedback to support student growth and competitive success.
The Assistant Coach works collaboratively with the Head Coach to support the overall goals and
expectations of the debate program. Additional duties may include assisting with tournament
preparation and participation, supervising and mentoring students, su pporting team activities,
communicating with school staff and families as appropriate, and helping foster a positive,
inclusive, and academically focused team environment.
The Assistant Coach is expected to follow the direction of the Head Coach and support consistent
program expectations, procedures, and communication. The position may also require assisting
with transportation, supervision, and student support during competitions and team activities.
Coaching students is approximately 2.5 hours after school, two days per week, along with
evenings and weekends for debate tournaments. During the competition season, the schedule
may include travel and extended hours to support students at local, regional, or state events.
Additional administrative work is done for preparation.
Qualifications Required:
- High School Diploma or GED/equivalent.
- At least 19 years of age at the start of the assigned season.
- Possession and maintenance of current First Aid/CPR/AED card.
- One or more years of previous experience in coaching the assigned activity.
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication in the English language,
including correct grammar and spelling usage.
- Legally eligible to work for any employer in the United States of America as verified by
Form I-9.
- Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint
clearance.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Supervises students to promote effective student learning through participation in
activities, modeling appropriate behavior in appearance, language, etc.

- Communicates respectfully and effectively with all stakeholders (e.g., parents,
community, students, opponents, officials, and staff).
- Adheres to coaching philosophy and leadership of head coach.
- Encourages students to participate in debate program and coaches all students equitably.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with parents, community, students,
opponents, officials, and staff.
- Administers discipline, when necessary, in a fair and consistent manner.
- Emphasizes safety precautions.
- Provides opportunities for each participant to achieve some success, providing feedback
to students before, during and at the end of the season.
- Assists in overseeing practice sessions that are both stimulating and instructive, and
conducted on a regular basis with the idea of developing the student's greatest potential.
- Emphasizes and promotes good sportsmanship in the conduct of team members and
coaches.
- Abides by regulations in the Coaches' Handbook.
- Follows district procedures for handling injuries.
- Attends all district and building athletic meetings as called by the Athletic Director.
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of ensuring an efficient and
effective work environment.

- Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them
from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.
