Position Summary

The Assistant Deli Manager supports the Deli Manager in overseeing all aspects of deli operations, ensuring high-quality food production, exceptional customer service, and adherence to company standards. This role assists in driving sales, managing team performance, controlling costs, and maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient department.

Key Responsibilities Operational Execution

  • Assist in managing daily deli operations including food preparation, merchandising, and inventory control
  • Ensure all products meet quality, freshness, and presentation standards
  • Maintain proper rotation, dating, and storage of all deli products
  • Support ordering, receiving, and inventory processes to minimize shrink and out-of-stocks
  • Ensure department cleanliness, equipment maintenance, and sanitation standards are met

Customer Service Excellence

  • Provide outstanding customer service and ensure a welcoming environment
  • Handle special orders, catering requests, and customer inquiries
  • Resolve customer concerns quickly and professionally
  • Promote deli offerings and drive sales through suggestive selling

Team Leadership & Development

  • Assist in hiring, training, scheduling, and developing deli associates
  • Provide coaching, feedback, and performance management
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and a positive work culture
  • Ensure compliance with attendance and labor productivity standards

Sales & Financial Performance

  • Support achievement of department sales, margin, and labor goals
  • Execute merchandising plans, displays, and promotions
  • Monitor waste and implement cost-control measures
  • Identify opportunities to grow sales and improve efficiency

Food Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure strict adherence to food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations
  • Maintain proper temperature logs and food handling procedures
  • Enforce company policies, safety standards, and regulatory compliance

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Previous deli, food service, or grocery experience preferred
  • Supervisory or leadership experience preferred
  • Strong customer service and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Frequent lifting of up to 40 lbs; occasional heavier lifting with assistance
  • Work in hot and cold environments (kitchens, coolers, and freezers)
