Assistant Director - Custodian Services - Training
The Assistant Director for Facilities - Custodial Services, Training & Development is a senior operational leader within Residential Life Facilities, reporting to the Associate Director of Housing Operations. This position provides strategic oversight, leadership, and direction for custodial services, property management, and human resource support across a comprehensive housing portfolio exceeding 3.2 million square feet, including residence halls, apartment communities, and Greek housing serving more than 8,600 students. Responsible for establishing and advancing service standards, operational efficiency, workforce development, and asset lifecycle management. The Assistant Director leads large-scale custodial operations, furnishings programs, inventory control, and emergency response support while ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and student experience goals serving as a key liaison with campus partners, contractors, and external agencies, and directly supervises custodial leadership while providing indirect oversight of a large workforce.

The Assistant Director for Facilities has the opportunity to design and lead a transformative training program for one of the largest custodial workforces on LSU's campus. In order to accomplish this, the Assistant Director will need to build structured onboarding, skills development, and performance pathways that directly elevate service quality and staff engagement across all residential facilities in order to meet the needs of the staff and the department.
As a senior operational leader, the Assistant Director has direct authority to re-engineer custodial workflows, implement data-driven performance metrics, and introduce new technologies and products that improve cost efficiency and service delivery. With real latitude to shape how this department operates at scale, there is an opportunity to determine the best path forward in implementing innovative process improvement and sustain operational excellence in the facilities area.
The Assistant Director serves as a key liaison with campus partners, contractors, and external agencies, providing high visibility across one of the University's most complex service areas. It is not only necessary, but mutually beneficial allowing for meaningful influence in shaping the student living experience for more than 8,600 residents and contributing to LSU's broader institutional priorities.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
25% - Strategic Leadership & Service Excellence: Provide vision, leadership, and accountability for custodial operations across all residential facilities, ensuring alignment with departmental standards and institutional expectations. Establish and maintain cleaning and service standards consistent with APPA Level 2 or higher, driving continuous improvement initiatives. Lead development and implementation of training programs, standard operating procedures, and workforce performance expectations. Partner with Residential Life leadership to enhance customer experience and responsiveness to student and staff needs. Ensure operational continuity across academic terms, summer conferences, and peak occupancy periods
20% - Personnel Management & Organizational Development: Lead all aspects of personnel management, including hiring, performance management, employee relations, and staff development for a large workforce Foster a culture of accountability, engagement, and professional growth among supervisory and front-line staff. Provide leadership in labor planning, workforce allocation, and organizational structure optimization. Develop and manage training and development for custodial workforce. Representing the department in managing internal and external relations for custodial staff. Lead efforts to develop a strong training programs and professional growth for support staff.
15% -Financial Oversight & Asset Management: Assist and advise the associate director and director to develop, manage, and monitor budgets for custodial labor, equipment, supplies, and furnishings programs. Ensure compliance with university and state policies related to inventory control, asset tracking, and procurement. Provide data-driven recommendations for capital investments, plant funds, and operational efficiencies.
15% - Process Improvement & Operational Analytics: Design and implement process improvements to enhance operational efficiency, service delivery, and resource utilization. Develop and maintain performance metrics, reporting systems, and operational analytics to inform decision-making. Prepare comprehensive reports and recommendations for senior leadership on cost effectiveness and service outcomes. Support emergency preparedness planning and operational response for residential facilities.
10% - Operations & Procurement Management: Evaluate and implement products, technologies, and equipment that improve cost efficiency and operational effectiveness. Ensure preventive maintenance and life cycle management of custodial equipment and assets. Maintain optimal inventory levels to support uninterrupted operations.
10% - Project & Event Management: Lead planning and execution of operational support for special events, conference housing, furniture installations, and transition periods. Coordinate logistics for construction impacts, occupancy changes, and large-scale operational initiatives
5% - Other Duties as Assigned: Participate in departmental, divisional, and university committees, initiatives, and strategic efforts. Contribute to key Residential Life events and campus-wide programs (e.g., Move-In, Welcome Week, Family Weekend) Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current with industry best practices
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's Degree
3 years experience
Some Supervisory Experience in Custodial or Facilities Operations
Some Management Experience with large-scale workforce and customer base

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
5 years experience - Experience with CMMS, inventory systems, or facilities technologies, management. Experience in large-scale facilities, higher education, or institutional operation

Emergency Essential Personnel - This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.
