Job Description

The Assistant Director for Training and Development supports Residential Experience by designing, implementing, and assessing a comprehensive training program for all staff levels within the unit. This role supervises full-time professional staff and indirectly supervises graduate and student employees. The Assistant Director role focuses on expanding staff knowledge and skills to enhance student support, success and engagement. As a member of the Residential Experience leadership team, the Assistant Director will directly supervise Residence Directors and collaborate closely with departmental partners to advance training initiatives. This position reports to an Associate Director for Residential Experience.

Job Duties

Supervision:

  • Supervise and provide leadership for full-time Residence Directors and indirectly supervise Graduate Residence Directors and Resident Assistants.
  • Provide ongoing direction and feedback about performance with supervisees. Evaluate performance, including conducting performance evaluations effectively and efficiently and attending to their professional development.
  • Assist in the recruitment and hiring of direct reports, including reviewing applicant materials, conducting candidate interviews, and offering recommendations for hiring.
  • Develop competencies in other functional areas within Residential Experience ensuring effective guidance for supervisees.

Professional and Student Staff Training:

  • Design and oversee all levels of training and ongoing professional development for Residential Experience staff, including professional and graduate staff and Resident Assistant training schedules.
  • Develop learning outcomes and session objectives for all training initiatives. Establish and maintain professional relationships with departmental and university partners throughout the year to ensure the department stays in compliance with the various training requirements.
  • Create and facilitate formal assessment of training programs with the explicit goal of continuously striving to improve the various training offerings to meet departmental priorities.

On-Call Responsibility & Student Support:

  • Participate in 24-hour on-call rotation with live-in professional staff colleagues; recognize that residence halls are open 365 days a year and therefore being on-call during holidays should be expected; respond to student and/or facilities issues or crises as a third-tier responder and in person as needed 24-hours a day; high level of in-person response to mental health concerns, other student support situations should be expected.
  • Consistent communication with senior leadership during crises or emergencies; maintain accurate incident reports using Maxient software. Work with Residential Life and Student Success teams to respond to critical incidents on campus; work with other departments to provide an appropriate response to crises.
  • Develop and maintain rapport with residents through regular student contact; attend supervisee building staff meetings as needed; assess needs and concerns of residents; advocate for students in all aspects of their housing and educational experience.
  • Identify personal and emotional concerns of students; provide appropriate resources and referrals; track and monitor student issues using Maxient database; maintain contact with parents and other constituencies as appropriate.

Unit Leadership:

  • Serve on the Residential Experience leadership team, managing and coordinating unit initiatives in support of departmental and divisional priorities.
  • Collaborate with other Assistant and Associate Directors in Residential Experience to deliver a consistent experience across all Residence Directors and communities.
  • Monitor budgets associated with the functional area of oversight and the residential area of supervision.
  • Represent the Department, the Division, and the University to students, families, alumni, and other stakeholders.
