Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Director, UG Student Services, the Assistant Director, Undergraduate Learning & Student Success will be a part of CSON's Student Services, working with the Associate Dean, Student Services (faculty position); the Assistant Dean, Graduate Enrollment, Student Services, and Financial Aid; and the Assistant Dean, Undergraduate Program & Student Success. This position plays a pivotal role in enhancing the academic success of college-level nursing students through targeted support and strategic initiatives. This position involves developing and implementing comprehensive academic success programs, providing one-on-one support, and fostering an environment that promotes inclusive excellence. In addition to working with members of the Student Services team, the Assistant Director will work closely with faculty who interact with students and who see where students are struggling, providing guidance on how to best support their learning needs.

This position will assist with ongoing, highly effective critical student success interventions including a first-year summer bridge program, that will be designed to help build the academic skills for college-level rigor and assist first generation nursing students with the transition to college. It will also support sophomore success interventions including near-peer mentoring for Pathophysiology. The Assistant Director will also have a role in the Student Formation Seminar.

Essential Functions:

Individualized academic support

  • Develop, manage, deliver, and assess academic support services for students in undergraduate and prelicensure graduate programs in collaboration with colleagues within CSON and across BC.
  • Coach students to develop an academic success plan, and identify specific strategies towards developing competencies to enhance their learning and develop themselves holistically.
  • Teach students how to assess their course demands, analyze academic tasks, construct and apply general and discipline-specific learning strategies.
  • Work with students to develop strong metacognitive and academic self-management skills through academic coaching and time-management consulting
  • Assess students' academic support needs and make recommendations or referrals to other undergraduate offices or services as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with CSON Student Services staff to identify and provide support for new and evolving areas of student needs

Outreach and Consultation

  • Provide consultation/training/outreach regarding Nursing students, faculty, deans/administrators, Student Affairs staff, and other campus partners.
  • Work closely with other university offices/programs in supporting students such as Connors Family Learning Center.
  • Communicate and meet regularly with faculty to consult on Nursing student learning issues and departmental policies.
  • Develop and deliver instructional workshops that meet the specific academic skills needs of student populations and groups.
  • Develop new materials for CSON, individual student meetings, and group workshops.
  • Revise current instructional materials in alignment with best practices in the field with a focus on Nursing education.
  • Assist with training graduate student assistants for roles pertaining to the First Year Nursing Seminar.
  • Participate in staff meetings and other related meetings and activities as needed.

Evaluation

  • In collaboration with CSON Student Services leadership, establish outcomes and conduct assessment and evaluation of services to measure these outcomes and implement iterative service enhancements.

Full-Time Equivalent Hiring Range: $67,350 to $84,200; salary commensurate with relevant experience.

Education/Training and Certification, Licensure, Registration Requirement:

Bachelor''s degree in nursing, mathematics, biology, chemistry, or related science area or Bachelor''s degree in education or special education with a concentration in mathematics or science.

  • Experience in academic support, tutoring, or student services, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Experience and/or Willingness to interact and engage with students using a remote environment (email; virtual platforms, etc)
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills
  • Knowledge of educational technology and resources to enhance student learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement successful academic support programs.
  • Understanding of Adult Learning Theory, and/or similar pedagogical methods
  • Ability and Willingness to work occasional weekends and/or evenings as needed to ensure service coverage
  • Ability to work well collaboratively
  • Ability to work well with minimum supervision

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master''s degree in nursing, mathematics, biology, chemistry, or related science area or Master''s degree in Education with a concentration in mathematics, science, or Curriculum & Instruction.
  • Experience working with non-native English language speakers
  • College-level tutoring or teaching experience

Experience:

3 years or more experience providing group or individualized services to students with learning support needs.

Exceptional Work Demands:

This position may need to work outside normal business hours of 9am-5pm. Students are in class from 8am-7pm regularly and this person may need to adjust time accordingly on occasion to meet student needs.
