POSITION OVERVIEW

This position will assist with all aspects of the athletic communications for Pirate Athletics in collaboration with the Associate Director of Athletic Communications and other athletic department management. They will coordinate sports information coverage for the assigned teams' events and competitions, assisting with the athletic social media and maintaining the historical and statistical data.

DUTIES

Sports Information

  • Managing game-day administrative matters and logistics as they apply to providing sports information for Volleyball, Men's & Women's Cross Country, Women's Basketball, Baseball, Women's Lacrosse, and Men's & Women's Tennis programs.
  • Support game stats, live stats, and webcasting for sports that require it as assigned.
  • Write game notes and press releases for each assigned contest, award, community service event, etc.
  • Release pertinent athletic information to local and national news outlets.
  • Respond to and manage media requests, interviews, news conferences, and photo sessions.
  • Collect and provide the necessary statistical data and information to the SAA, SCAC and NCAA.
  • Assist with nominations for honors and awards for student-athletes and coaches.
  • Maintain historical records, statistics, and photographs among other important department information.
  • Assist with the recruiting, training, and scheduling of student workers who will assist with sports information duties.

Marketing & Communications

  • Assist with digital content development for Pirate Athletics digital media (southwesternpirates.com, email, and social media)
  • Discover and write compelling feature stories that highlight and promote student-athletes, coaches, staff, and Pirate Athletics on a regional and national level.
  • Write content for marketing and communication materials (including media guides, video scripts, etc).

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Attend and/or assist with select events during the year.
  • Participate on campus committees as requested.
  • Other reasonable duties as assigned by the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics or designee.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum education, experience, licenses, certifications, and competencies (knowledge, skills, and behaviors) which are necessary for performing the listed duties. List first those which can be objectively measured.

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
  • Experience in athletic communications or a related field.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Southwestern University and NCAA guidelines regarding publications and promotions.
  • Extensive experience with StatCrew or similar statistics software.
  • Basic knowledge of HTML and web content management systems (specifically Sidearm Sports).
  • Basic photography and photo editing skills.
  • Ability to be flexible, adjust to fluctuating priorities, and produce a reliable work product.
  • Ability to attend work consistently and have flexible work hours based on the athletic competition schedule.
  • Have knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of cultural differences and the diversity within the campus and community.

Further preferred qualifications which are also desirable for performing the listed duties.

  • Two or more years of sports communications experience, including one or more years of experience in a university or professional sports setting.
  • Master's degree from an accredited university

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Starting annual salary: $45,628 The final offer for the successful candidate will be commensurate with experience and may exceed the starting annual salary.
