    Mission

    Position Summary

    As part of the YWCA of Asheville team, the Assistant Director supports the Senior Director with day-to-day operations and team supervision so the department runs smoothly. This role oversees the Program Coordinators and Nutrition Team, keeps up-to-date records for licenses and funding, organizes administrative tasks, and helps families and staff with questions and needs. The Assistant Director must understand North Carolina childcare facility rules and support compliance with state requirements. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible position, reporting directly to the Senior Director of Early Childhood Education.

    Duties and Responsibilities

    Supervisory Responsibilities

    • Provide direct supervision to the Program Coordinators and Nutrition Team, following our leadership guidelines, including feedback, training, and career growth opportunities.
    • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to the Program Coordinator as appropriate.
    • Meet regularly to discuss progress to make sure goals are met and rules are followed.
    • Oversee daily work with the Senior Director to support the five-star program.
    • Help staff sign up for and renew TEACH scholarships.

    Administrative Support  

    • Help the Senior Director with tasks they need done to ensure smooth daily operations.
    • Review paper and digital files that are required for licensing and grant reporting.
    • Help organize staff schedules so we have enough teachers in each room.
    • Creates reports for the Senior Director and outside partners.
    • Support overall program operations through special projects that help us work better and follow the rules.

    Compliance and Program Monitoring

    • Follow state and federal childcare rules
    • Tell the Senior Director about larger problems right away. 
    • Continuously learn about NC childcare rules and updates.
    • Keep staff and child records complete and correct for licenses, money, and our policies

    CACFP/Subsidy Program Administration

    • Process payments for Early Learning Program and childcare subsidies.
    • Ensure everything is checked, tracked, and documented correctly with outside funders" 

    Family and Staff Coordination

    • Welcome new families through orientations, interviews, and tours
    • Partner with the Enrollment Coordinator to keep financial records correct for payments
    • Treat parents, outside agencies, and YWCA staff with respect and helpfulness

    Classroom and Program Support

    • Help in classrooms when needed; step in for teacher breaks or cover short-term gaps
    • Give teachers the forms and supplies they need
    • Serve as temporary acting director if and when approved if the Senior Director is gone during an emergency
    • Do other tasks the Senior Director asks for

    Required Skills and Abilities

    • Lead teams well, following our code of conduct and good leadership practices
    • Great communication and relationship skills to work well with children, families, and staff.
    • Organized and able to handle many things at once.
    • Comfortable using programs such as Microsoft Office and Google Suite, email, entering data, and organizing files.

    Education and Experience

    What You Need

    • High school diploma required.
    • Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood or a related field is a plus
    • Level 1 North Carolina Early Childhood Administration Credential (NCECAC)
    • 5 years in childcare, with at least 2 years leading staff or managing programs
    • Familiarity with ITERS and ECERS rating systems
    • Experience using childcare software, like NC Fast, ProCare, Creative Curriculum, and Early Head Start.

    Working Conditions

    • Most work happens in an office, but you will also be interacting with children, staff, and parents.
    • Possibility of coming into contact with common childhood illnesses.
    • Work alongside families and staff from many different backgrounds
    • Must be able to perform CPR and basic first aid with training and certification provided, including child and infant CPR and first aid
    • Pass a North Carolina childcare background check (required by law)

    Physical Requirements

    • Long stretches of sitting and computer work.
    • Some lifting of up to 50 lbs. may be needed.
    • You may also bend, lift, and play physically with children.

    Other Duties
