Position Overview

The Assistant Director of First-Year Experience (FYE) and Student Transitions within the Student Experience and Engagement department partners and supports the Director in leading, designing, and executing the comprehensive orientation experience that effectively transitions new students and families into the Butler University community. This role assists in the overall coordination and planning management with direct oversight of specific programming, ensuring a seamless and welcoming entry experience aligned with institutional goals.

Responsibilities

Orientation Program Leadership

  • In partnership with Director of First-Year Experience and Student Transitions, execute the planning and coordination of all orientation programs with direct oversight of January/Spring orientation

  • Develop and manage timelines, logistics, and program operations

  • Oversee pre-orientation and transition-related experiences

Student Leader Management

  • Help recruit, select, train, and supervise orientation leaders with Director of FYE and Student Transitions

  • Develop leadership opportunities and ongoing support for student staff

Family and Support People Engagement Programming

  • Coordinate and implement family engagement that enhances transition and retention including Orientation, Family Weekend, and Family Council with Director of FYE and Student Transitions

  • Support communication strategies that engage families throughout the transition period

Operational Coordination and Logistics

  • Manage event logistics including scheduling, space coordination, and vendor relationships with direction of Director of FYE and Student Transitions

  • Collaborate with campus partners to implement orientation and family programming

  • May occasionally operate University-owned vehicles, to transport individuals, equipment, materials, and supplies in support of departmental and University activities

  • Ability to occasionally flex standard working hours to support the department as needed

Collaboration and Support of Transition Initiatives

  • Partner with campus stakeholders to support the implementation of transition-related efforts

  • Contribute to broader Student Experience and Engagement initiatives as needed

Other Duties as Assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, or related field
  • 1-3 years of experience in orientation, event planning, or student transition programs or similar
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Experience working with and advising student leaders
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must possess and maintain an acceptable driving record in accordance with University policy
  • Comfortable with occasional evening and weekend work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing large-scale programs or events
  • Familiarity with student engagement technologies and communication platforms
