Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), RN

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON), RN supports the Director of Nursing in overseeing the daily clinical operations of the nursing department. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, staff supervision, and adherence to facility policies and procedures. The ADON plays a key leadership role in fostering a positive clinical environment and maintaining excellence in patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership & Operations

  • Assist the Director of Nursing in managing day-to-day nursing operations
  • Provide supervision and support to nursing staff (RNs, LPNs, CNAs)
  • Ensure quality resident care in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations
  • Participate in care planning and interdisciplinary team meetings
  • Act as DON in their absence

Staff Management & Development

  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of nursing staff
  • Provide coaching, training, and performance evaluations
  • Monitor staffing levels and assist with scheduling as needed
  • Promote a culture of accountability, teamwork, and professional growth

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with CMS guidelines and state regulations
  • Assist with survey readiness and lead efforts during inspections
  • Monitor clinical indicators, incidents, and infection control practices
  • Participate in Quality Assurance Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs

Resident & Family Relations

  • Address resident and family concerns with professionalism and empathy
  • Promote resident-centered care and satisfaction
  • Ensure proper communication between staff, residents, and families

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain accurate clinical documentation and reporting
  • Assist with policy development and implementation
  • Support audits, chart reviews, and compliance tracking

Qualifications

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice
  • Minimum 2–3 years of nursing experience, preferably in long-term care or skilled nursing
  • Previous leadership or supervisory experience strongly preferred
  • Strong knowledge of regulatory standards (CMS, state guidelines)
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a charge nurse, unit manager, or nurse supervisor role
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMR) systems
  • Experience with survey process and quality measures

Work Environment

  • Healthcare facility (skilled nursing, long-term care, or assisted living)
  • May require weekends, on-call rotation, or extended hours as needed
