Position Summary

The Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC) at the UNC School of Medicine seeks an experienced and strategic leader to serve as Assistant Director of Shared Resources. This position provides senior-level leadership and oversight for the Cancer Center's research shared resource infrastructure, ensuring that shared resources effectively support innovative cancer research, across basic, translational/clinical, and population health sciences.

The Assistant Director is responsible for facilitating efforts with the Associate Director of Shared Resources in strategic planning and evaluation, operational oversight, and continuous advancement of all the Cancer Center-supported shared resource entities. Working closely with shared resource directors, faculty investigators, and Cancer Center leadership, the Assistant Director will develop and implement policies, performance standards, and operational frameworks that promote scientific excellence, operational efficiency, and broad investigator access. Additionally, the Assistant Director provides leadership in financial stewardship of shared resources, including oversight of operating models, rate development, cost recovery strategies, and long-term capital planning. The role includes monitoring financial and utilization data to inform strategic investments, guiding resource development, and ensuring sustainability.

The Assistant Director also serves as the primary liaison for leading the Lineberger Shared Resources Oversight Committee and ensuring that each shared resource appoints and holds their own advisory committees at least annually. This position may be asked to represent Cancer Center leadership on institutional committees related to research infrastructure and core facilities.

In addition, the Assistant Director works closely with Lineberger's Associate Director for Administration and the Associate Director for Shared Resources in the preparation and coordination of shared resource components of the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and preparation for the Center's annual External Advisory Board. This position also contributes to the development of competitive grant applications supporting shared resource technologies and infrastructure.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master's or Bachelor's and 0-2 years' experience; or will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Demonstrated experience in oversight of shared resources/core facilities within an academic medical center, research institute, or comparable research environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in research administration (pre and post award grants management) along with federal and other extramural agency proposal development.
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex scientific or research support programs involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Experience with financial management, including budget development, cost-recovery/cost center development, and service rate development for shared resources.
  • Proven ability to analyze operational and financial data to support strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with faculty leadership, research staff, and administrative partners.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing reports, strategic documents, grant-related materials, and presentations.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Experience working within a National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center or similar large-scale, federally supported biomedical research environment.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing shared resource/core facility infrastructure supporting biomedical or translational research.
  • Experience contributing to the development or administration of NIH grants or other large multi-project awards.
  • Experience developing external partnerships or expanding shared resource utilization with academic, clinical, or industry collaborators.
