Description

The Assistant Director of Sports Performance is responsible for assisting with the development, implementation, and supervision of comprehensive strength and conditioning programs for Hampton University student-athletes. This position supports the physical development, injury prevention, performance enhancement, and overall wellness of assigned athletic programs while promoting a culture of excellence, safety, and accountability.

The Assistant Director of Sports Performance will work collaboratively with coaches, athletic trainers, sports medicine staff, and athletics administration to ensure student-athletes are prepared to perform at their highest level.

Examples of Duties

  • Assist in the design and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for assigned athletic teams.
  • Conduct team and individual training sessions focused on strength, speed, agility, flexibility, mobility, and conditioning.
  • Monitor student-athlete progress and adjust training programs as needed to maximize performance and reduce injury risk.
  • Collaborate with Sports Medicine staff regarding injury prevention, rehabilitation, and return-to-play protocols.
  • Assist with performance testing and evaluation of student-athletes.
  • Educate student-athletes on proper training techniques, nutrition, recovery, hydration, and overall wellness.
  • Maintain a safe and organized training environment and ensure proper use of equipment.
  • Assist with supervision and scheduling of strength and conditioning facilities.
  • Maintain accurate records related to training programs, testing data, and attendance.
  • Support recruiting efforts by assisting with campus visits and presentations regarding sports performance services.
  • Ensure compliance with NCAA, Conference, University, and Athletics Department policies and procedures.
  • Assist with oversight of graduate assistants, interns, and student workers assigned to Sports Performance.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, professional development opportunities, and continuing education activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Performance and Athletics Administration.

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Performance, Physical Education, or a related field required.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Current certification through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA-CSCS) or Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association (SCCC) required.
  • Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications required.
  • Previous collegiate athletics strength and conditioning experience preferred.

Supplemental Information

  • Ability to demonstrate and supervise strength and conditioning exercises.
  • Ability to lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and work in an active training environment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of strength and conditioning principles, program design, and performance enhancement techniques.
  • Knowledge of injury prevention, recovery methods, and athlete development strategies.
  • Ability to design and implement sport-specific training programs.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and motivational skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with student-athletes, coaches, and staff.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and travel as required.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
