Job Summary

The Assistant Director of Student Communications will lead the development and implementation of a comprehensive communications strategy focused on students. This role will ensure that college communications provide timely, accurate and relevant information that anticipates student needs, answers common questions and supports student success.

Reporting to the Associate Vice President for Communications, the strategist will work in close partnership with Student Affairs, Enrollment Management, Student Success and other campus units with the goal of aligning messaging across departments and platforms to create a coordinated, proactive and personalized communication experience for students throughout their academic journey.

Responsibilities

Student Communications Strategy & Execution -

  • Develop and implement a collegewide strategy for communicating with students that is proactive, coordinated and aligned with institutional priorities.
  • Collaborate with academic units and administrative offices to ensure consistent, accurate and timely messaging to students.
  • Manage and optimize communication channels used to reach students, including email, digital platforms, web content, text messaging and other emerging tools.
  • Ensure all student communications adhere to institutional standards for tone, branding, clarity, accessibility, and prioritization.

Coordination & Governance -

  • Serve as a central point of coordination between campus offices sending student-facing communications.
  • Review and approve large-scale communications (200+ recipients) for timing, relevance, and alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Establish standards and best practices for student communications across the college to reduce duplication, streamline messaging and improve clarity.
  • Provide guidance and training to campus partners on effective communication with students.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of a coordinated communications calendar, identifying message overlap and recommending sequencing or consolidation.

Data-Informed Targeting & Personalization -

  • Use student data (e.g., academic level, major, registration status, holds, milestones) to help design targeted and personalized communications.
  • Support proactive ¿nudges¿ and campaigns related to registration, advising, financial aid, and academic milestones.
  • Monitor engagement metrics (open rates, click-through rates, response patterns) and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.

Texting, Chatbot, and Digital Engagement -

  • Assist in assessing and scaling enterprise-level texting and chatbot platforms to support on-demand student communication.
  • Develop and manage SMS campaigns tied to critical student success outcomes.
  • Partner with IT and functional areas to ensure students can access clear, accurate, and consistent answers through self-service tools.

Campus Events & Information Management -

  • Support implementation and ongoing management of the centralized campus events calendar, ensuring it functions as the single source of truth for student events, trainings, and

activities.

  • Collaborate with campus partners to streamline event promotions and reduce unnecessary email volume.
  • Assist in building digest-style communications that aggregate events and non-urgent information.

Content Development & Resource Alignment -

  • Collaborate with Financial Aid, Student Accounts, Advising, and other offices to develop and maintain clear, up-to-date FAQs related to:
  • Financial aid and billing, registration and enrollment processes, and academic resources and student services.
  • Ensure alignment between emailed communications and student-facing website content.

Assessment & Student Voice -

  • Use analytics, surveys and student feedback to assess the effectiveness of communications and continuously improve strategies.
  • Assist in preparing reports and summaries for campus leadership related to student communications effectiveness.

Required Qualifications

  • 4 Year / Bachelors Degree in Communications, Marketing, Higher Education, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in communications, marketing, or student-facing messaging, preferably in higher education.
  • One or more years of supervisory experience (people or program)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Higher Education, Communications, Marketing, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or coordinating communications across multiple channels.
  • Strong writing, editing, and content strategy skills.
  • Experience using communication platforms such as CRM systems, email marketing tools, or SMS platforms.
  • Experience with student lifecycle or enrollment communications.
  • Familiarity with systems such as Banner, EAB Navigate, CRM platforms, or learning management systems.
  • Experience using data to inform communication strategies.

Proposed Salary

63,500 - 79,500

Salary offer will be dependent on candidates experience and qualifications, internal equity considerations, budget availability, and salary administration guidelines
