Overview

The Assistant Director of Student Conduct is a staff member within the Division of Student Affairs. The Assistant Director is supervised directly by the Director of Student Conduct and operates as the second in command in the absence of the Director. The Assistant Director is responsible for assisting the Director with the administration of non-academic student conduct procedures for both on-campus and off-campus students, supporting out-of-classroom learning and the holistic development of students into informed, responsible citizens.

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Student Conduct is a leadership role within the Division of Student Affairs that supports the Director of Student Conduct in administering the university's non-academic student conduct system. Serving as the second-in-command, the Assistant Director oversees the investigation and adjudication of individual student conduct cases and leads investigations involving student organizations. The position focuses on promoting student accountability, ethical decision-making, and personal development through a student-centered conduct process that incorporates restorative practices and educational interventions. The Assistant Director also provides guidance and support to students throughout the conduct process while helping to ensure compliance with university policies and behavioral standards.

In collaboration with campus partners such as Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Involvement, and Athletics, the Assistant Director develops and delivers proactive educational programs on topics including hazing prevention, risk management, healthy relationships, bystander intervention, and organizational accountability. The role serves as a key resource for student organizations, advisors, and student leaders by providing training, consultation, and support related to conduct processes, leadership responsibilities, and risk reduction strategies. Additionally, the Assistant Director helps create leadership and intercultural learning opportunities, contributes to a safe and inclusive campus environment, and participates in an on-call rotation to address urgent conduct matters that may require immediate university action.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Case Management

  • Investigate and adjudicate alleged violations of the NIU Student Code of Conduct by individual and student organizations, the residence hall handbook, and other institutional policies, in accordance with the process outlined in the NIU Student Code of Conduct
  • Assist in the management of complex, high-impact, or sensitive conduct matters requiring collaboration with campus partners such as the Civil Rights Office, Campus Police, Housing and Residential Life, Legal Affairs, Threat Assessment, or senior university leadership
  • Collaborate with Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Involvement, Athletics, and other campus partners to develop educational initiatives focused on organizational accountability, risk management, hazing prevention, and leadership development training

Training & Development

  • Prepare and develop training and presentations for students and staff related to student conduct hearings
  • Development and implement training for student organizations on topics related to organizational compliance, hazing prevention, risk management, leadership development and student conduct
  • Assist campus partners serving as student conduct advisors, hearing officers, and board members
  • Facilitate educational programming and outreach efforts to increase awareness of the Student Code of Conduct
  • Participate in professional development activities to maintain currency with legal requirements and best practices
  • Provide supervision as an administrator to a designated Graduate Assistant

Administrative

  • Responsible for the primary updates and maintenance of the Maxient reporting record system, including investigation reports, summaries of findings, and case assessments, including recommendations for sanctions consistent with the Student Code of Conduct as it relates to housing conduct
  • Utilize Maxient Conduct Manager to accurately document and manage assigned cases
  • Responsible for compiling and analyzing case data to support annual reporting, FOIA requests, and legally required statistical reporting
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student records in compliance with FERPA
  • Serve as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and assist with Clery Act crime reporting

Restorative Practices Implementation

  • Implement restorative practices throughout the conduct process
  • Actively participate in the design and implementation of restorative practices within the campus community

Student Engagement & Outreach

  • Serve as a consultant, educator and resource for prospective students, current students, parents of students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders on the expectations of NIU's Student Conduct, including outreach education and presentations
  • Intentionally interact with students and provide opportunities for student growth and development by leading activities surrounding positive decision-making utilizing the Northern Pact

Minimum Required Qualifications (Civil Service)

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A total of one (1) year (12 months) in education, training and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position.
  • Based on position requirements, additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.

Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.

Specialty Factors (Civil Service)

  • Master's degree in college student personnel, counseling, higher education, higher education administration, student affairs administration, conflict resolution, or a related field.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Knowledge of student disciplinary systems and higher education law. Knowledge of principles and procedures for personnel recruitment, selection, training, compensation and benefits, labor relations and negotiation, and personnel information systems.

Preferred Qualifications (Civil Service)

  • Two (2) years of experience in student conduct administration, preferably in housing and residential life conduct.
  • Direct experience managing a caseload or other experience that demonstrates strong organizational skills and the ability to balance priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Maxient (case management software).
  • Sensitivity to student needs and the ability to relate to students, staff and the public.
  • Demonstrated interest in student conduct, student affairs, or a related field through academic preparation, internship, volunteer service, or comparable experience.
