Job Description:

Job Title: Assistant Human Resources Manager

Department: Human Resources

FLSA: Non-Exempt

General Function:

Acts as an assistant to the Assistant Vice President of Human Resources and assumes responsibilities during their absence. They also oversee the non-management Human Resources staff at the Chariton Distribution Center (excluding the training team), with a primary focus on payroll, benefits administration, event planning, and employee relations. Additionally, this position entails executing all payroll functions and promptly delivering and updating necessary reports and information.

Reporting Relations

Accountable and Reports to: Assistant Vice President, Human Resources

Positions that Report to you: Human Resource Coordinators and Payroll Coordinators

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Acts as assistant to the Assistant Vice President, Human Resources and supervises the HR department.
  • Prepares payroll, completes corresponding reports, transmits information, and prepares expense checks.
  • Assumes the lead role in payroll, benefits administration, and event planning
  • Investigates all payroll errors, missed punches, etc.
  • Responsible for training and managing the performance of Payroll Coordinators.
  • Provides input and assists in drafting performance appraisals and disciplinary action for Human Resources employees working in payroll, benefits administration, and event planning.
  • Conducts investigations and assist with the resolution of employee concerns.
  • Drafts responses to unemployment claims and represents the company in hearings.
  • Collaborates with members of management on projects.
  • Collaborates with the AVP of HR to ensure that the distribution center is using all available 260E funds.
  • Oversees monthly reporting on turnover, safety, recruitment, exit interviews, and payroll.
  • Calculates holiday double time and overtime rates for bargaining unit employees six holidays a year, usually involves ten weeks per year.
  • Compiles monthly and quarterly incentive calculations and reports wages to West Des Moines for profit/bonus reports.
  • Assume a key role in drafting and implementing process improvements and standard operating procedures.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities: (These are considered occasional in nature)

  • Assists with planning, implementing, set up and organization of Hy-Vee functions.
  • Acts as back up to Human Resources Coordinators working in payroll, benefits administration, and event planning.
  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

Experience and Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience.
  • One to three years of similar or related work experience.

Supervisory Responsibilities (Direct Reports):

  • Assigns work to others and works with warehouse managers as needed to resolve problems.
  • Independent judgment in decision-making skills necessary to be able to complete this job.
  • Provides and guidance, supervision, and training to Payroll Coordinators.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to physically perform light work exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally.
  • Visual requirements include vision from less than 20 inches to more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, field of vision, and color vision.
  • Must be able to perform the following physical activities: Stooping, reaching, standing, walking, grasping, fingering, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.

Working Conditions:

The duties of this position are performed in an office setting. At times must travel in warehouses with dust, dirt, noise, and hazards. Often times handles multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.

Equipment Used to Perform Job:

Copier, telephone, printer, Workday, EXE System, CRT and a PC with Microsoft Office
