Assistant Land Surveyor/PLS

Role Description: Huitt-Zollars, Inc. is seeking an Assistant Land Surveyor/PLS at our Irvine or Thousand Oaks office. This role is ideal for an PLS with strong technical expertise and project delivery experience across boundary, topographic, land title, and construction surveys. The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality survey products, supporting project management efforts, mentoring technical staff, and collaborating closely with engineers, architects,and clients. This position offers the opportunity to work on diverse projects within a collaborative, employee-owned professional services environment.

Reports to: Survey Manager

Registration(s): California PLS

Duties:

  • Produce CAD drawings on projects including boundary, topographic, land title surveys and construction calculations.
  • Assist in reviews and processes results of field surveys.
  • Assist in tracking project scopes and budgets.
  • Prepare legal descriptions.
  • Research survey records and land titles to obtain information regarding property boundaries, areas to be surveyed.
  • Coordinate research findings with work of engineers, clients and others involved in projects.
  • Verifies accuracy of field survey data including measurements and calculations, GPS Survey data conducted at survey sites.
  • Prepare data, charts, plots maps, records and documents related to surveys.
  • Perform other related land survey project tasks as needed.

  • Productively collaborates with PMs and encourages teams to achieve success and camaraderie amongst each other.
  • Understands and follows HZ QMS and Quality initiatives. Assists PM on ensuring that quality control measures are being adhered to on projects and daily operations.
  • Understands duties and responsibilities, possesses necessary job knowledge and technical skills, maintains job knowledge current.
  • Assist with appropriate administrative and project support tasks supporting the needs of the PM on assigned project tasks.
  • Contributes to successful delivery and performance of projects.
  • Complete assignments on-time, within budget, and with highest level of quality.
  • Routinely proposes and produces more effective ways to accomplish tasks.
  • Effectively leads, creates, plans, executes project tasks on a project.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years' experience.
  • California PLS required.
  • Proficient in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Experience with Autodesk survey databases.
  • Knowledge of field staking procedures and interpreting design plans.
  • Experience with Trimble Business Center for surveying support, GPS adjustments, and processing scanning data a plus.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience in the principals and practice of land surveying in California.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills for supervising field crews, and working collaboratively with teams of engineers, architects and sub-contractors.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D required knowledge of Micro-Station and Trimble Business Center a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer, type/key-in data
  • May lift and carry up to 50 pounds, hike up and down steep slopes carrying up to 50 pounds of survey equipment
  • The employee must be able to concentrate on details, work under deadline pressures, apply sound logic and judgment, and prioritize tasks and responsibilities
  • Employee may be asked to walk on uneven terrain
  • May work in extreme weather conditions
  • Bend, squat, dig monument holes, pound in stakes and rebar monuments
  • Carry and use brush cutting equipment
  • May drive survey vehicle

Annual Base Salary Range: $137,000-$161,000 and up depending on experience and qualifications of the selected candidate(s). The expected salary range for this position is displayed in accordance with the California Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. The final agreed upon compensation is based on the success candidate's individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. The total annual compensation package will consist of a base salary and consideration to participate in our discretionary annual bonus incentive program.
