Position Purpose

The Assistant Meat Manager supports the Meat Manager in overseeing all aspects of meat department operations, including customer service, merchandising, production, inventory management, food safety, and associate development. This position helps ensure the department delivers high-quality products, maintains operational excellence, and achieves sales and profitability goals. The Assistant Meat Manager serves as a key department leader and may assume responsibility for department operations in the Meat Manager's absence.

Key Responsibilities Customer Service & Sales

  • Deliver outstanding customer service by providing a welcoming and knowledgeable shopping experience.
  • Assist customers with product selection, meal solutions, cooking recommendations, and special orders.
  • Ensure meat cases and displays are fully stocked, properly signed, and visually appealing.
  • Support sales growth through effective merchandising, promotions, and suggestive selling techniques.
  • Resolve customer concerns promptly and professionally.

Department Operations

  • Assist in coordinating daily department production and merchandising activities.
  • Ensure product quality, freshness, and proper rotation of all meat products.
  • Support inventory management through accurate ordering, receiving, and stock control practices.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and customer-ready sales and production areas.
  • Assist with executing company programs, seasonal promotions, and merchandising initiatives.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Assist with training, coaching, and developing meat department associates.
  • Promote a positive work environment focused on teamwork, accountability, and customer service.
  • Support scheduling and labor management to meet operational needs.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and recognition to team members.
  • Lead by example through professionalism, integrity, and strong work habits.

Food Safety & Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all food safety, sanitation, company, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor product handling, storage temperatures, labeling, and date rotation procedures.
  • Maintain department readiness for food safety and operational audits.
  • Ensure adherence to workplace safety standards and safe equipment operation.
  • Identify and address safety concerns to protect associates and customers.

Financial Stewardship

  • Assist with managing department sales, profitability, labor, and expenses.
  • Support shrink reduction efforts through proper ordering, handling, merchandising, and inventory control.
  • Monitor product movement and identify opportunities to improve operational performance.
  • Contribute to achieving department and store financial goals.
  • Help maintain strong in-stock conditions while minimizing waste.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous meat department, food service, retail, or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of meat products, cutting procedures, merchandising, and food safety practices preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, carrying, and twisting.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to work in refrigerated environments for extended periods.
  • Ability to safely operate meat department equipment in accordance with company standards.
