  • Connecticut Intermediate Administrator and Supervisor Certification (092)

Position Overview

New Milford Public Schools seeks an outstanding educational leader to serve as Assistant Principal at Schaghticoke Middle School. Working closely with the Principal, the Assistant Principal supports daily school operations, instructional excellence, student achievement, and a safe, inclusive learning environment.

The successful candidate will be a visible, collaborative leader who embraces the middle school teaming model, promotes strong social-emotional connections, and demonstrates exceptional organizational and leadership skills. Guided by the districts core values-Focus, Heart, Collaboration, and Creativity-the Assistant Principal will balance consistent discipline with restorative practices while supporting high-quality instruction through meaningful feedback, staff development, and shared leadership.

This role includes oversight of school operations, instructional programming, scheduling, budgeting, student discipline, and literacy and numeracy initiatives. The Assistant Principal also supports the districts Portrait of a Lifelong Learner and Instructional Keystones, ensuring these frameworks guide daily practice and decision-making.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree.
  • Connecticut Intermediate Administrator and Supervisor Certification (092).
  • Five years of successful teaching experience, preferably at the middle school level.
  • Administrative or teacher leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of adolescent development, middle school education, teaming, literacy, and numeracy.
  • Experience balancing restorative practices with effective student discipline.
  • Demonstrated success building positive school culture and improving student outcomes.
  • Strong organizational, communication, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to design schedules, support professional learning, and strengthen instructional practice.

Essential Responsibilities

The Assistant Principal works with the Principal to:

  • Support, evaluate, and improve instructional programs.
  • Supervise and evaluate certified staff while promoting professional growth.
  • Provide actionable instructional feedback and develop teacher leadership.
  • Foster collaboration through the teaming model.
  • Maintain a visible presence that promotes student belonging, safety, and engagement.
  • Implement restorative practices alongside consistent disciplinary expectations.
  • Build positive relationships with families and the community.
  • Assist with budgeting and resource management.
  • Coordinate emergency preparedness, crisis response, and school safety procedures.
  • Collaborate with district personnel to maintain secure facilities.
  • Promote staff wellness and a positive school climate.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal laws regarding student safety, mandated reporting, and civil rights.

Additional Responsibilities

Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.

Physical Requirements

Occasional lifting, pulling, or pushing; frequent walking and standing.
