An Assistant Principal in a Tennessee public high school plays a vital role in executing administrative duties, overseeing student discipline, and serving as the primary instructional leader alongside the principal.
Core Job Responsibilities
- Instructional Leadership: Assists the Principal in evaluating teacher performance via the state evaluation model; provides data-driven coaching; reviews lesson plans; and monitors Student Growth and Achievement Data (such as TNReady and End-of-Course exams).
- Student Operations & Discipline: Manages the student body caseload; enforces school and district code of conduct; handles behavioral referrals; and tracks daily attendance trends.
- School Safety & Management: Oversees building operations; coordinates emergency drills; supervises facility maintenance; and manages morning, lunch, or afternoon bus duty rosters.
- Stakeholder Communication: Facilitates consistent communication with families; resolves parent concerns; and leads community outreach programs.
- Extracurricular Oversight: Supervises and coordinates student events, school dances, athletic events, and graduation ceremonies.
- Proxy Leadership: Acts as the executive administrator on campus whenever the Principal is absent.
Minimum Education & Experience Requirements
- Degree: A Master's Degree or higher in Educational Leadership, School Administration, or a closely related field.
- Licensure: Must hold a valid Tennessee Educator License with an active Administration/Supervision (Instructional Leadership) endorsement.
