Role: Assistant Principal

Location: Upson-Lee Primary

Reports to: Principal

FLSA Status: Exempt

Contract Days: 210 days

Retirement: TRS

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and accountability in working with all school stakeholders including teachers, parents, support personnel, students, and community members to achieve standards and develop and improve the instructional programs of the school.
  • Assist in the ongoing development of the Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) and assist in communication of the CIP with the principal.
  • Encourage the acceptance of individual responsibility and the development of initiative on the part of all staff.
  • Attend meetings of the school staff and enlist the cooperation of all staff members in the solution to school related issues.
  • Participate in the appointment, re-appointment, promotion, dismissal, and performance evaluation of all school staff as assigned by the principal.
  • Assist the principal in the direction and supervision of the labor of all employees in the school with the exception of the School Nutrition Staff.
  • Administer regulations affecting scholarship and discipline, counsel with students as needed, and if designated, administer discipline according to the guidelines provided.
  • Maintain desirable relationships with school stakeholders and counsel with them concerning student progress and achievement.
  • Assist with certification of compliance of individual students with the requirements for promotion or graduation, on the basis of records and reports from teachers.
  • Assist with the communication of all official business of the school.
  • Supervise the proper use and preservation of buildings, grounds, furnishings, equipment and facilities of the school.
  • Submit to the principal, as may be required, reports covering details of the work of the school.
  • Assist the principal in ensuring that grade report cards are properly completed and issued at designated times.
  • Ensure that all inter-school contests and all other school sponsored activities are under the direct and complete control of the school administration; that finances related to such school activities are handled the same as other school funds.
  • Assist in the application of procedures to ensure all funds are receipted regardless of the source as required by the school/system guidelines.
  • Participate in professional development/training classes and conferences designed to enhance knowledge and skills, as determined in cooperation with the principal.
  • Review current development, literature and technical sources of information related to job responsibility.
  • Ensure adherence to good safety procedures.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as School Board policies and administrative directives.
  • Support students and staff with encouragement and by building positive relationships.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Hold or be eligible for the required certification.
  • Ability to work well with students, parents, staff, and the community.
  • High integrity, excellent character, and good professional reputation.
  • Abide by the Georgia Professional Standards Code of Ethics for Educators.
  • Ability to be regularly, predictably, and reliably at work.
  • Ability to perform tasks involving prolonged periods of standing, walking, and sitting.
  • Ability to perform routine physical activities such as bending and lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision, hearing, written, and verbal communications are essential factors in performing required tasks.
  • Must be able to properly and consistently supervise students particularly during emergency situations.
