    Description of Work -------------------

    The University of North Carolina at Charlotte recognizes the differentiation of mission goals and objectives inherent in the diversity of disciplines represented by its colleges and departments. Thus the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Tenured and Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate goals.

    Teaching ---------

    Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to:

    • Subject matter competence
    • Course design
    • Course presentation
    • Advising and consultation
    • Directing student research
    • Curriculum and instructional development
    • Grading student work

    Scholarly Research ------------------

    All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of their academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty members discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to:

    • Research
    • Creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge
    • Publication
    • An on-going agenda for research
    • Scholarly and creative activity
    • Seeking extramural support for their work

    Service to University -------------------

    All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to:

    • Service to the administration and governance of the University
    • Public service
    • Service to the profession

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities --------------------------------------

    Faculty work should synthesize contemporary issues and design practice as critical modes of inquiry at multiple scales. The faculty members work should demonstrate how design can engage the complex ecologies of cities addressing critical urban issues such as climate change, adaptive infrastructures, and community resilience. The successful candidate is expected to employ innovative methods-such as computational data-based and/or participatory processes-that expand the ways we understand and shape urban environments. The candidate should approach the urban as a global condition and demonstrate familiarity with a diverse array of urban design, architectural design, and research methods. Strong applicants will have experience teaching design studios, a record of relevant and transdisciplinary research or practice, a commitment to design as a critical tool for shaping urban conditions, and an ability to address general education coursework when needed. Candidates whose work bridges research and practice are especially encouraged to apply.

    Minimum Experience ------------------

    Education ----------

    UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned doctorate or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline. Preferred Education -------------------

    • An advanced degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, or a related discipline is required.
    • Applicants with degrees in process graduating no later than summer 2026 may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
    • ABD PhD applicants may similarly be considered.

    Necessary Licenses ------------------

    • Professional licensure in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, or a related discipline is required.
    • Applicants in process of becoming licensed may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
