    Primary Function of Organizational Unit

    The NCCU School of Education offers undergraduate, graduate, licensure and professional development programs to train students to become teachers, principals, counselors, as well as serve as mentors to community schools. The School offers traditional, classroom-based instruction as well as synchronous and asynchronous online/web-based instruction. Faculty and staff offer diverse knowledge and experience, providing students with a unique learning experience using the latest technology; small class sizes provide easier access to peers and instructors. The primary goal of the School of Education is to prepare educators for Diverse Cultural Contexts in the 21st Century.

    Primary Purpose of Position

    This open rank, tenure-track faculty position is housed in the Special Education Program located in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction in the School of Education. Primary teaching responsibilities include face-to-face, hybrid, and online graduate courses in visual impairment, orientation and mobility, and related-areas. Supervision of clinical field experiences and research leading to publications and presentations at academic conferences is expected. Additional duties include academic advising, research and scholarship, university service, collaboration, accreditation related activities, promotion of the program and the university, and other duties as assigned by the department chair.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    The successful candidate will have specific knowledge and experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses and clinical supervision in Special Education with an emphasis in visual impairment and/or orientation and mobility. Candidates must demonstrate potential for effective teaching in special education at the graduate level, research and service, and activity in appropriate professional societies. Strong interpersonal skills, online education experience, and excellent organizational and communication skills are expected.

    Minimum Education/Experience

    Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Special Education or a related field with primary specialization in visual impairment and/or orientation and mobility. Candidates who are ABD will be considered. Candidate must have valid credentials in visual impairment and/or orientation and mobility. Applicants should have demonstrated potential for scholarly publication and successful teaching at the university level. Preference will be given to applicants committed to preparing teachers for culturally diverse populations, and those with expertise and teaching experience with PK-12 special education students with visual impairments. ACVREP Certification in the area of Orientation & Mobility and/or Assistive Technology.

    Licenses or Certification required by Statute or Regulation

    NC Teaching License or eligibility for NC Teaching License.

    Effective teaching of campus and online classes in the special education program (i.e, visual impairment and orientation and mobility), supervision of practicum and internship. Engagement in curriculum development and support for accreditation maintenance.

    Visual impairment/orientation and mobility focused-research that leads to publication in peer reviewed journals and dissemination at state, national, and/or international conference. Procurement of grant funding that supports the mission of the School of Education.

    Function Administrative Describe the specific tasks and responsibilities related to the function.

    Student advisement and participation in school and university service, and scholarly activities. Scholarly activity includes contributions to the profession such as serving on the editorial board of a journal or as a member/leadership position of a state or national counseling organization.
