Assistant Professor - English Teaching, Writing Studies

The Department of Writing Studies at Boise State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English Teaching, beginning in August 2027. We seek a teacher-scholar with expertise in English education and experience teaching English Language Arts in grades 6-12. The successful candidate will contribute to the preparation of future English educators, maintain an active research program, and participate in service to the department, university, profession, and broader educational community.

Primary teaching responsibilities will include undergraduate English Language Arts methods courses and other courses that support the department's English Teaching major. The successful candidate will have opportunities to shape curriculum, mentor and advise preservice teachers, and build partnerships with schools and educators throughout the region.

This position also offers meaningful opportunities to work with educators across the career span. The faculty member may contribute to the Boise State Writing Project and collaborate with colleagues, practicing teachers, and community partners to strengthen the teaching of writing and English Language Arts. About the English Teaching Program

The English Teaching program prepares educators to cultivate classrooms grounded in dialogue and inquiry, empowering young people through the English Language Arts. Guided by our values-collaboration, inquiry, growth, possibility, and community-our program takes an asset-based approach to preparing middle and high school teachers. Leading to ELA certification in grades 6-12, our curriculum integrates methods coursework with field-based experiences and local classroom mentorship.

Minimum qualifications:

• PhD or EdD in English education, literacy education, curriculum and instruction with a focus on English Language Arts, literacy, or a related field

• Experience teaching English Language Arts in grades 6-12 in the United States

Preferred qualifications:

• Experience teaching preservice teachers

• Record of research/scholarship

• Demonstrated commitment to student-centered, dialogic, and asset-based pedagogical approaches

Salary and Benefits:

Salary starts at $61,000 and is commensurate with experience.

Our standard faculty contract is a 9-month contract (unless otherwise noted) with pay and benefits spread over 12 months. This is a yearly, renewable contract, unless noted that the position is temporary. More information about faculty contracts and work days is available here.
