Job Description:

The Department of Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies (WGSS) and the Department of Psychology (PSY), College of Social Sciences, University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM, Honolulu, Hawai'i) invite applications for a joint position between WGSS (50%) and PSY (50%) at the Assistant Professor (F-3) level with the locus of tenure in WGSS. This is a 9-month, full-time, permanent, tenure track, joint faculty appointment to begin on August 1, 2027, subject to position clearance and availability of funds.

UHM is an R1 (Very High Research Activity, Carnegie Classification) institution located on a beautiful arboretum campus. UHM is a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant university with the core mission of generating, preserving, and disseminating knowledge for the greater good of the people of the state of Hawai'i and the world beyond through teaching, research, and service in a way that promotes inclusiveness and beneficence for all.

We seek a dynamic and dedicated individual who is passionate about research, teaching, and contributing to the academic community as well as demonstrates commitment to, knowledge of, and/or experience with supporting the mission and purpose of UH as a leading indigenous-serving higher education institution. The successful candidate is expected to deliver and develop needed courses to support WGSS and PSY in the College of Social Sciences.

Specifically, we are seeking a scholar with training in prevention, social justice, and ecological frameworks whose research explores gender based violence and intersecting axes of identity within a community context. This could include research focused on sexual violence, intimate partner violence, reproductive justice, gender disparities in incarceration, and/or work centered on abolitionist frameworks and restorative justice practices. We are particularly interested in scholarship that focuses on these issues from a cultural perspective, recognizing the disproportionate impact of these injustices on different communities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Teach lower and upper-level WGSS and PSY courses contingent upon the needs of both departments, respectively. Teaching assignments may involve courses delivered through in-person, online, and hybrid instructional modalities. Examples include Gender and Violence, Psychology of Women, Human Sexuality, and/or other undergraduate upper-division courses and graduate seminars;
• Advise undergraduate and graduate students;
• Conduct scholarly research and participate in creative endeavors;
• Disseminate research findings at professional conferences and through publication;
• Seek extramural funding in areas of expertise;
• Provide service to departments, academic, university, and community;
• Other duties as assigned by Department Chairs.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in Psychology, Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Public Health/Social Work, or related field from an accredited university. ABD candidates will be considered but all degree requirements must be completed and degree conferred prior to date of hire;
• Ability to teach university-level courses in WGSS and PSY as demonstrated by student evaluations and/or administrative reviews;
• Record of research achievement in empirically-based WGSS, PSY, and/or Public Health/Social Work commensurate with time in the field;
• Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications:

• Ability to effectively interact and teach in an Indigenous-serving setting and environment with varying backgrounds.
• Experience teaching about gender with an intersectional focus, including courses on community psychology principles (e.g., community engagement, social justice), research methods, and/or general WGSS courses.
• Ability to involve undergraduates in research experiences.
• Ability to write and/or administer grants.
