Duties and Responsibilities

• Conduct research or undertake comparable Scholarly activity and establish an externally funded and nationally recognized research program in the area of paleoclimatology.
• Design and teach one to two courses per academic year. Courses assigned may be in the area of specialization or related field.
• Supervise independent study activities and off-campus learning such as practicums and internships.
• Serve as academic advisor to students.
• Participate on committees in charge of candidates for advanced degrees.
• Serve on department, college, and University-wide committees.
• Participate in curriculum development activities including the development of curricular materials and special instructional methods.
• Render service to the professional or lay community which is relevant to the individuals academic specialty.
• Conduct research and/or teaching activities focused on paleoclimatology or related Earth science topics relevant to Hawai?i or the Pacific region.
• Collaborate with faculty, staff, and students in ways that support the University's mission, vision, and strategic plan, while contributing professional perspectives that enrich the University, SOEST, the Department, and the broader communities we serve.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree (at the time of appointment) from an accredited college or university of recognized standing in a field relevant to the position (Earth, Ocean or Atmospheric Sciences, Geology and Geophysics, Geography or related fields).
• Demonstrated scholarly achievement.
• Demonstrated excellence in professional written and oral communication. Examples include, but are not limited to, publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals, technical reports, public-focused communications, and presentations at professional meetings.
• Ability to establish an extramurally funded research program.
• Expertise in producing records that enhance our understanding of past and present climate dynamics, and inform projections of future climate.
• Demonstrated ability as a teacher.
• Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, administrators, and the larger community, all of which are comprised of individuals with various perspectives and experiences.
• Expressed interest in a future research and teaching program that contributes to the UH mission of becoming a Native Hawaiian place of Learning (https://manoa.hawaii.edu/nhpol/).
• Interest in supporting the campus' strategic mission to integrate Native Hawaiian approaches, values, and knowledge with respect and cultural sensitivity into learning and academics.

• Demonstrated ability to conduct creative, high-quality research and potential for scientific leadership, including making transformative advances in the field.

• Demonstrated experience in extramural research funding or leadership in paleoclimate research programs.
• Demonstrated evidence of leading or conducting creative, high-quality research including making transformative advances in the field.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching and mentoring, including creative approaches for enhancing student learning.
• Expertise and desire to teach courses in environmental Earth sciences at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
• Demonstrated record of nationally or internationally recognized research accomplishments.
• Expressed interest in scientific endeavors relevant to Hawaii and the Pacific region.
• Expertise and ability to relate their scholarly activities to recent climate change, potential mitigation strategies, coupled human and natural systems, or other societal implications of their work.
• Research skills and interests that complement and enhance the research activities in Earth Sciences and other units at University of Hawaii as well as State and Federal agencies in Hawaii.
