Assistant Professor of Cognitive Science and Computer ScienceJob Description:
Barnard seeks to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Cognitive Science and Computer Science to begin July 1, 2027. The area of focus is at the intersection of Human Cognition and Artificial Intelligence. The faculty member's primary affiliation and tenure line will be in the Department of Computer Science, with responsibilities split between the Computer Science Department and the Cognitive Science Program at Barnard. We are seeking candidates who work at the intersection of human cognition and artificial intelligence. The ideal candidate will pursue research and teaching that advances both our understanding of how the mind works and the development of new cognitively inspired and ethically designed AI systems. A successful hire will further the aims and vision of the Cognitive Science Program and Computer Science Department at Barnard.
Barnard is a premier liberal arts undergraduate college for women in New York City affiliated with Columbia University. Barnard faculty are expected to engage in teaching, research, curriculum and program development, undergraduate advising, and mentoring of undergraduate research. There are also opportunities to collaborate with faculty and students across Barnard College and Columbia University, including Columbia’s NSF AI Institute for Artificial and Natural Intelligence (https://arni-institute.org/).
The Program in Cognitive Science at Barnard (https://barnard.edu/cogsci) is a relatively new program that brings together faculty across several departments, including Psychology, Philosophy, Neuroscience and Behavior, Computer Science, and Economics.
Barnard’s Computer Science (CS) Department (https://cs.barnard.edu/) has faculty with expertise in Security and Privacy, Natural Language Processing, Computer Graphics, Augmented Reality, AI and Law, Human-Computer Interaction, and Programming Synthesis. The Barnard Computer Science Department works closely with the Vagelos Computational Science Center and with the Columbia CS Department (https://www.cs.columbia.edu/).

Required Qualifications
Candidates must have a PhD in Computer Science, Cognitive Science or a related discipline, and should have a promising research agenda and record of scholarship, as well as a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching, mentoring, and increasing participation in cognitive science and/or computer science.

Salary: $95,000 - $140,000
