The Department of Theatre and Dance
Job Summary
The Department of Theatre and Dance at Columbus State University invites applications for a ten-month Assistant Professor, tenure-track position in costume design and technology to commence August 2026. The successful candidate will teach in the BFA Design and Technology programs, as well as offering coursework in the Departments other degree tracks; serve as a costume, make-up, and hair designer for departmental productions; as costume, make-up, and hair design advisor for departmental productions; and work with the Costume Shop Supervisor.
Responsibilities
Significant Duties and Responsibilities include: Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to, costume design, periods of design, introduction to theatre, costume history, construction, crafts, dyeing, and make up. Experience in both hand and digital rendering techniques across different platforms is desirable. Design experience for dance will be viewed favorably. Other responsibilities include active participation in service to the department/university, recruitment, ongoing research/creative scholarship, and professional accomplishments.
Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications include: An MFA in costume design or related field by time of appointment.; Record of professional creative practice and/or academic scholarship in the discipline of costume design at the regional, national, and/or international level.; Evidence of strong costume technology and crafts skills.; Commitment to liberal arts education and collaborative learning.; A developing or established record of creative or scholarly work consistent with the expectations of a tenure-track position.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications include: Demonstrated ability to design for dance.; Record of engaged and accomplished teaching at the undergraduate level.; Demonstrated experience with makeup design.; Demonstrated experience of costume design in non-theatrical contexts (e.g., film/TV).; Demonstrated experience with sustainability of materials/resources for costume design.; Record of successful student mentorship.
