The Department of Economics in the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor of Economics, beginning Fall 2027.

You will teach undergraduate and graduate courses, establish clear learning objectives, develop curriculum and instructional materials that accomplish those objectives, and provide students with the support needed to succeed. We welcome candidates who can contribute expertise in economics and statistics and build productive professional relationships within the community and across the university.

Job Summary

Teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels using various instructional deliveries (e.g., traditional (face-to-face), hybrid, and fully online). To foster applied learning into the course design and engage with industry and local business community applied projects. To advance knowledge through scholarly activities (e.g., active involvement in committees, student mentorship, recruitment and retention initiative, outreach activities, etc.)

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  1. Teaching: Teach two courses per semester (four courses per academic year) at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with courses offered in face-to-face, hybrid, blended, and fully online formats. Each course is three credit hours. Teaching assignments may include, depending on the candidate''s expertise and program needs, Principles of Microeconomics, Labor Economics, Business Statistics, and related courses with the opportunity to develop courses in the candidate''s area of expertise. The successful candidate will establish key objectives for classes, develop curriculum and syllabi, present course material through lectures and learning activities, and answer students'' questions and provide support to help them succeed.

  2. Applied Learning and Community Engagement: Foster applied learning in course design by developing meaningful opportunities for students to engage with industry, local businesses, and the larger community through applied projects, case studies, professional engagement, and other experiential learning activities.

  3. Research: Develop and maintain an active and sustainable program of academic research consistent with AACSB Scholarly Academic (SA) expectations and the requirements for tenure and promotion at the Barton School of Business. The successful candidate will be expected to publish high-quality scholarly research in respected and leading economics or related academic journals and advance knowledge through sustained scholarly activity.

  4. Service and Engagement: Contribute meaningful service to the department, Barton School of Business, university, profession, and local community. Service may include active involvement in committees, student mentorship, student recruitment and retention initiatives, professional organizations, outreach activities, and other activities that advance the mission of the department and school.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Terminal degree in direct field
  • Teaching experience

Faculty Requirements

  • A Ph.D. in Economics from an accredited institution.

Applicants who are at an advanced stage of their doctoral studies (ABD) will be considered if they provide strong evidence that all degree requirements will be completed prior to the June 2027.

  • Evidence of an established record of scholarly research or a strong research pipeline with demonstrated ability or potential to publish in high-quality economics or related academic journals.
  • Evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, effective teaching in economics at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Evidence may include teaching evaluations, curriculum or course development, applied-learning activities, experience with face-to-face, hybrid, blended, or fully online instruction, or other indicators of teaching effectiveness.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of economics and statistics.
  • Ability to build professional relationships within the community and across the university at all levels.
  • Ability to provide instruction of curriculum to a variety of learners.
  • Commitment to collaborative processes and environments.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research and/or teaching interests in labor economics and/or environmental economics.

Use of empirical methods, econometric techniques, or data-intensive approaches to address applied economic questions.

REQUIRED MATERIALS

  2. Teaching Statement: A statement (1-2 pages) describing teaching approach/philosophy and experience (including course topics the candidate can teach, mentoring experience, and any evidence of teaching effectiveness).

  3. Research Statement: A statement (1-2 pages) describing research approach/philosophy and experience.

A priority deadline for application review is October 31, 2026. The appointment for the position is August 2027.
