Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Department of Media Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences focuses on the creative production and critical analyses of a range of moving-image media. The faculty is composed of award-winning artists, scholars, and practitioners. The Department is housed in the Brown Building and in the Carmichael Center. Originally constructed to serve the University of North Carolina public broadcasting system, the Carmichael Center now holds the Department's soundstage, screening room, production classrooms, editing lab, audio recording studio, and location production equipment inventory. The Department enhances the curriculum with opportunities to learn outside of the traditional classroom setting and participate in a variety of media productions. These include the Department's internship program, registered student organizations for film production, and its client-based production clinic, Spartan Media Productions.
Position Summary
The Department of Media Studies at UNC Greensboro invites applications for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Media Studies with an emphasis on the History and Critical Analysis of Interactive and Emerging Media to begin August 1, 2027. We seek a scholar whose research explores the history, theory, and cultural and societal impacts of digital platforms, interactive, and emerging media. The successful candidate will have an established record of scholarship in emerging media research, with expertise in areas such as Cinematic AI, VR/AR/XR, internet subcultures, video games, interactive and immersive media, or virtual production. Candidates should be prepared to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in media theory and studies, including History of Digital Media, Media Theory, Seminar in Media Studies, and Theory and History of Emerging Media. Responsibilities include ongoing scholarly and professional activity, and service to the department, college, and university.
