Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, the nation's first HBCU, seeks a visionary and experienced Band Director to lead its marching band, concert band, and instrumental ensembles. This tenure-track faculty position is an exciting opportunity to shape a band program that reflects the rich cultural traditions of HBCUs while fostering musical excellence, student engagement, and community pride.
The Assistant Professor of Music will be responsible for teaching music, including applied lessons in their discipline. This faculty member will also provide academic advising to students, engage in curriculum development and design, and participate in the assessment of student learning projects within the discipline, the department, and the University. Continuing excellence in teaching and scholarly or creative activity, professional development, and service to the University are expected to qualify for reappointment, tenure, and promotion.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in band direction, music education, student mentorship, and program development, with a deep understanding of HBCU musical traditions. The Band Director will also contribute to curriculum development, academic advising, and recruitment efforts to grow and sustain a thriving band program. This position will start the spring semester of 2027.
The successful candidate will be responsible for advancing the mission and vision of the University through music.
Requirements
Doctorate (DMA, PhD) in Music Five or more years of university-level conducting and teaching experience. Experience with band technology, drill design software, and multimedia integration. Documented success in fundraising, student recruitment, and program development. History of professional activity at regional and national levels.
