Job Description

The Sociology Department at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning July 1, 2027. Teaching responsibilities in a typical academic year include Introduction to Sociology, electives in the candidate's area of expertise, and one of the core Sociology courses within the Sociology Program (either classical theory, research methods, statistics, or the senior capstone). In alternate years, the successful candidate will teach a core course in the Public Health program and occasionally a First-Year Seminar, in support of the Colleges' general curriculum. The standard teaching load is 5 courses a year (a 2/3 load) along with student advising and department and institutional service.

We seek candidates with a sociological approach to Public Health and candidates with expertise in classical sociological theory or quantitative methods are especially encouraged to apply. The Sociology department at Hobart and William Smith College is a change-oriented department with expertise in: Criminology, Education, Family, Gender, Race, Social Policy, Urban Life, and Victimology. Applicants should have a record of effective undergraduate teaching that emphasizes critical thinking and active learning. Candidates who incorporate community engagement into their courses are encouraged to describe their plans for continuing this work in the local Geneva, NY community.

Candidates should demonstrate a promising research agenda. Areas of research interest include but are not limited to: health policy, healthcare systems, medical sociology, the social determinants of health, epidemiology, aging, occupational health, traditional health practices, and environmental public health. We encourage candidates to discuss whether/how they envision involving undergraduate students in their scholarly agenda. Scholarship at HWS is evaluated relative to a teacher-scholar model rooted in the mission of liberal arts education. The salary range for this position is $60,343 - $73,605.
