The Department of Chemistry at Xavier University of Louisiana invites applicants for a non-tenure track position in Chemistry at the Assistant Professor level beginning August 2026. The ideal candidate will have a Master's or Ph.D. in Chemistry or Chemical Education; experience teaching at the undergraduate level; and a commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Ability and willingness to work collegially with a 4-4 teaching load are essential. Ideal candidates should also have the ability to develop and teach face-to-face as well as online classes. The department is seeking an applicant who is willing to teach and serve as the Organic Chemistry Laboratory Coordinator. The Lab Coordinator has the following responsibilities:

  • Preparing solutions and reagents for all sections of Organic Chemistry I and II labs;
  • Preparing and maintaining equipment for Organic Chemistry Labs;
  • Maintaining an inventory of chemicals, supplies, and equipment for the Organic Chemistry labs;
  • Maintaining awareness of best practices in Organic Chemistry lab instruction;
  • Developing new experiments for potential use in Organic I and II labs;
  • Responsibility for course coordination and assessment for organic Chemistry I and II labs;
  • Responsibility for ensuring safety in the labs at all times.

The Department of Chemistry at Xavier University of Louisiana is one of the highest-ranked undergraduate programs in the country for students from underrepresented areas in the sciences. The Department offers several degree programs in Chemistry and Biochemistry at the undergraduate level only. The department is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds, minimizing barriers, and increasing equity and completion rates among members of different demographic groups.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in Chemistry or Chemical Education (conferred by the time of appointment)
  • Commitment to academic advising and mentoring of HBCU students leading to readiness for graduate school and the workforce;
  • Write and Speak English proficiently;
  • Commitment to the mission of Xavier University of Louisiana.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong commitment to teaching a full load of 24 credit hours per academic year;;
  • Ability to teach Organic Chemistry labs;
  • Ability to develop and teach new experiments;
  • Ability to perform all coordinator duties;
  • Ability to develop a pedagogical project centered around the Organic Chemistry laboratory curriculum, and;
  • Demonstrated strong potential for excellence in teaching and mentoring undergraduate students.
