    The Department of Political Science, College of Social Sciences, University of Hawaii at Manoa (Honolulu, Hawaii) invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor (F-3) in Political Theory. This is a 9-month, full-time, permanent, tenure-track faculty appointment to begin August 1, 2027, subject to position clearance and availability of funds.

    UHM is an R1 (Very High Research Activity, Carnegie Classification) institution located on a beautiful arboretum campus. UHM is a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant university with the core mission of generating, preserving, and disseminating knowledge for the greater good of the people of the state of Hawai'i and the world beyond through teaching, research, and service in a way that promotes inclusiveness and beneficence for all.

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in political theory, including the required history of political thought;
    • Supervise, advise, and mentor MA and PhD students;
    • Publish scholarly, peer-reviewed research in areas of expertise;
    • Provide service to the department, university, and community;
    • Seek extramural funding;
    • Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Ph.D. in Political Science or a related field from a college or university of recognized standing, or foreign equivalent. ABDs will be considered but all degree requirements must be completed and PhD conferred prior to date of hire;
    • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in area of expertise and political theory;
    • Ability to mentor and advise students in the applicants area of research;
    • A record of research achievement (publications, grants) commensurate with time in field;
    • Ability to develop and sustain department curricular concentration in political theory.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
    • Ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team in cooperative endeavors.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Demonstrated specialization in contemporary political theory and plural traditions of political philosophy.
    • Teaching experience with innovative educational strategies.
