Assistant Professor (Research Track) - Biophysics - Erzberger Lab

An Assistant Professor (Research Track) position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Jan Erzberger, Associate Professor in the Department of Biophysics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. The successful candidate will conduct advanced research aligned with the scientific mission of the Erzberger laboratory, which investigates the biogenesis and function of eukaryotic ribosomes using integrated structural, biochemical, biophysical, and genetic approaches.

The candidate will isolate and characterize ribosomal complexes using single-particle cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM). Structural findings will be evaluated through complementary biochemical and biophysical assays designed to test and refine mechanistic interpretations. Core responsibilities will include recombinant protein expression and purification, cryo-EM specimen preparation and data collection, image processing and structure determination, atomic model building, and the development of functional assays.

The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary research team and will be expected to mentor junior laboratory members, help oversee data acquisition and analysis, and contribute to the rigorous interpretation and communication of research findings. Additional responsibilities will include presenting research at institutional, regional, and national scientific meetings and contributing to the preparation of manuscripts, grant applications, and other scientific communications.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in biochemistry, structural biology, or a closely related discipline and have at least five years of relevant research experience. Extensive expertise in protein biochemistry and the structural analysis of large macromolecular complexes by single-particle cryo-EM is required. Strong communication, organizational, collaborative, and mentoring skills are also expected.
