Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Department of Geography, Environment, and Sustainability (GES) currently offers B.A., B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees and houses the interdisciplinary Environment & Sustainability Program. Position Summary
The Department of Geography, Environment, and Sustainability at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in urban economic geography to begin August 1, 2027. We prefer candidates with interests in urban planning and economic development. Candidates must hold or anticipate a Ph.D. in Geography or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
We seek a dynamic scholar-teacher to build on existing departmental strengths in urban/economic geography, physical geography/environmental science, geographic information science, and sustainability. We are interested in candidates with high potential to develop an externally funded research program and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research. Areas of preferred focus include economic aspects of energy, smart cities, regional economic development, transportation, and other infrastructural elements of modern urban life.
The candidate will teach courses in urban geography, economic geography, planning, plus one or more courses in environment and sustainability. Strong skills and experience using geographic information systems (GIS) are desirable. The ability to collaborate across disciplines with other departments and engage with communities in their research and teaching will be viewed favorably.
