The Department of Biological Sciences at Old Dominion University is seeking applications for two tenure-track faculty positions to begin in Fall 2027 from individuals with active research programs in One Health, with a preference for virology, vector-borne diseases, infectious diseases, or host-pathogen interactions. Preference will be given to candidates at the Assistant Professor level, but highly qualified individuals may be considered at the level of Associate Professor. The Department of Biological Sciences has a large undergraduate enrollment with over 1,500 majors and a vigorous graduate program including MS and PhD programs. The integration of Eastern Virginia Medical School into Old Dominion University to create the Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University (https://www.odu.edu/virginia-health-sciences)provides many additional opportunities for collaboration. BSL2 and ABSL2 laboratory space and other core facilities are available.

The successful candidates are expected to develop and maintain active research programs that are externally funded, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and contribute to service in the department. These positions will share in teaching of undergraduate and graduate-level courses such as One Health, Medical Microbiology, Clinical Immunology, Histology, Host-Pathogen Interactions, Virology, Parasitology, Emerging Infectious Diseases, GIS in Life Sciences, and Vector-borne Diseases.

Candidates must have a doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Biology or a related discipline and relevant postdoctoral (or equivalent) experience.

Candidates must have:

  • A strong scholarship record commensurate with experience
  • Demonstrated potential to establish an active research program and to acquire external funding
  • Demonstrated potential for excellence in teaching
  • Strong communication skills.
