About the opportunity:

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking an Assistant Project Biologist for our Denver, Colorado Program Management business, with experience in natural resource management, technical writing, and construction compliance in Colorado and Wyoming. We are seeking a candidate who is looking to develop or continue a long-term consulting career that combines strong writing skills, ability to collaborate with SWCA natural resources technical experts and client managers, training others in proper technical report writing and editing, and possessing a deep understanding of client requirements for deliverables.

 

This is a full-time, regular (with benefits), hourly position, reporting to one of SWCA’s Project Managers. This position reports into the Denver office.  Hybrid work environments are encouraged.

What you will accomplish:
  • Writing natural resource reports and sections of documents including threatened and endangered species habitat assessment reports, aquatic resource reports, biological evaluations, biological assessments, environmental assessments, environmental impact statements.
  • Writing and reviewing reports and sections of documents for content, clarity, and consistency, including construction compliance reports.
  • Use compliance management platforms such as Fulcrum and Procore, as well as Smartsheets to organize construction compliance information.
  • Leading, overseeing and completing both large and small reports, including managing multiple report writers on larger projects.
  • Organize, review, and transfer field data, and assist in writing, or write, technical reports and permit applications and subject matter expert review related to the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, local municipal and county regulations, and other resource planning/permitting relevant in the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains.  Report writing may reach 65% of the position's required time commitment.
  • Prepare reports and permit documents as the primary author and conduct quality assurance/quality control.
  • Evaluating report content and organization to ensure that it achieves its purpose and strive for consistency among various documents prepared for the same client.
  • Taking initiative, resolving problems, and creating improved procedures to assure tasks are completed in the most effective manner.
  • Assist SWCA editors and natural resource Project Managers in training other staff in writing-related matters.
  • In support of writing reports, training technical staff on best practices for reviewing the quality of field data collected, interpreting and compiling field data into narratives and associated forms, and pulling all collected data into a comprehensive report. 
  • Training and mentoring technical staff and new report writers on SWCA procedures and unique report writing requirements for each agency.
  • Organizing and tracking all reports as they are assigned, written, senior reviewed, edited, and submitted.
  • Working with designated team to create training videos, templates, and checklists.
  • Take responsibility for team safety, develop safety plans (when applicable), and anticipate potential safety hazards.
Experience and qualifications for success:

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, botany, environmental science, or a related field.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of environmental industry experience in the public or private sectors required. 
  • Experience working with scientists, planners, engineers, contractors, and agency specialists, particularly in a construction compliance setting.
  • Proficiency in writing natural resources and construction compliance technical reports -- these may include those related to the Endangered Species Act; the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act; and/or other biological requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of four (4) years of environmental industry experience in the public or private sectors required.
  • Experience in preparing reports and permits as primary author for construction compliance projects (transmission and wind energy) is preferred.  
  • Construction compliance experience strongly preferred.

Additional Information

  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain. 
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.  
  • It is anticipated that moderate travel will be required for the position, with field work sometimes reaching 50% of your time (seasonally), especially for assistant project biologists.

An employee in this Denver, CO-based position can expect an hourly rate of between $28.67/hour to $37.40/hour.  Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.  Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
