Project Overview:
The Assistant Project Engineer will support New York Power Authority (NYPA) generation projects by performing financial and project management tasks under the supervision of Project Engineers throughout all project phases, including Initiation, Scoping, Design, Construction, and Closeout.
Key Responsibilities:
* Prepare project plans, risk registers, contractor/consultant award memos, purchase requisitions, scopes of work/services, and other administrative/project governance documents under the direction of Project Engineers.
* Prepare purchase requisitions, develop contract documents, and collect accounting information for new contracts and change orders.
* Attend project health status meetings to update schedules, costs, and project status, ensuring project information remains accurate and up to date.
* Forecast and verify project budgets and stakeholder resources, coordinating updates with the Project Controls team.
* Prepare award memos for new contracts and change order memos to authorize additional contract funding and contract validity dates where required.
* Track monthly invoices and prepare accruals for project financials.
* Coordinate internal and external stakeholder reviews of submittals and RFIs through NYPA Project Management Integrated Software (Procore).
* Maintain comment logs documenting reviews and coordinate follow-up actions to ensure comments are addressed and properly closed.
* Develop and maintain a Project Action Items List, review progress with the project team, and follow up with stakeholders to ensure timely completion.
* Ensure licensing, environmental, permitting, safety, code compliance, construction, and stakeholder requirements are incorporated into projects, particularly during initiation through design phases.
* Support Project Engineers with internal and external stakeholder engagement, coordination, technical document review, specifications, drawings, project forecasting, variance reporting, schedule management, contract management, and project assurance.
Required Skills:
* Proficiency in Microsoft Word, including cross-referencing, indexing, and advanced document functions.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, Pivot Tables, and high-quality chart preparation.
* Ability to understand and communicate technical engineering information effectively in both verbal and written formats.
* Ability to manage project schedules and financials.
* Desired proficiency with project and construction management software such as Procore or equivalent.
* Working knowledge of SAP and purchase order systems for cost tracking is a plus.
* Proficiency with Microsoft Project or Primavera P6 for schedule development and management is preferred.
Education & Certifications:
* Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, or Electrical preferred), Construction Management, or a related field.
* Minimum one year of experience in engineering, construction management, or project administration preferred.
* EIT and/or CAPM certification preferred or the ability to obtain certification.
Work Schedule:
* Monday through Friday.
* 7.5-hour workday with a 0.5-hour unpaid lunch.
* Paid for actual hours worked.
* No paid vacation or sick leave.
* Work is not permitted during NYPA and Canals holidays.
* Hybrid schedule requiring a minimum of three days on-site, with the possibility of fully on-site work based on business needs.
Engagement Requirements:
* Candidates must be local to the Tri-State area.
* Must be in W2 tax status as an hourly paid employee of the service provider.
* Fully remote work is not permitted.
* Hybrid work requires a minimum of three days on-site and may transition to fully on-site based on business requirements.
* NYPA provides desktops and dedicated workstations; candidates must use their personal equipment to remotely access NYPA systems on virtual workdays.
* Hybrid work privileges may be revoked if equipment, internet connectivity, or work performance from home is deemed insufficient.
* Foreign national status and visa information must be disclosed at the time of submission.
* A Benefits Waiver and Ethics Disclosure are required during onboarding.
