Your impact
The Assistant Project Manager (APM) will support the Project Manager in the planning, coordination, and execution of utility infrastructure projects. This position will work closely with engineering, construction, project controls, procurement, contractors, client personnel, and other stakeholders to help ensure projects are executed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with client requirements.
The ideal candidate will have experience supporting projects within the utility, engineering, or construction industry. Natural gas utility experience is preferred, with LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), pipeline, and/or Xcel Energy project experience considered a strong plus.
Assignments will be performed under the direction of a Project Manager, with increasing responsibility and independence based on experience and demonstrated performance.
The Assistant Project Manager will be expected to:
- Assist the Project Manager with the overall planning, coordination, and execution of utility projects.
- Support early project development activities, including scope definition, estimating, scheduling, constructability reviews, and project planning.
- Coordinate activities between engineering, construction, project controls, procurement, permitting, operations, contractors, and client teams.
- Assist with monitoring and managing project scope, schedule, cost, quality, risk, and deliverables.
- Maintain project documentation and tracking tools, including action item lists, project logs, change logs, risk registers, meeting minutes, and technical records.
- Support the development and review of project schedules, cost forecasts, progress reports, and management reporting.
- Coordinate engineering and design deliverables to support construction requirements and project milestones.
- Support procurement activities, material tracking, contractor coordination, and construction readiness.
- Participate in and support project, client, contractor, engineering, and stakeholder meetings.
- Track action items and follow through with responsible parties to ensure timely resolution.
- Assist with project change management, including identification, documentation, tracking, and coordination of scope, schedule, and cost impacts.
- Assist in identifying and resolving engineering, construction, scheduling, and field-related issues.
- Interface professionally with client technical staff, operations personnel, contractors, engineering teams, and other project stakeholders.
- Support field activities and visit construction sites as required to monitor progress and assist with project coordination.
- Perform records research and information gathering at client offices, project sites, and other locations as required.
- Assist with project turnover, commissioning, documentation, and closeout activities.
- Promote a strong culture of safety, quality, accountability, teamwork, and client service.
- Perform other project management responsibilities as assigned to support successful project delivery.
Here's what you'll need
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in project management, project engineering, construction management, engineering, or a related utility/infrastructure environment.
- Previous natural gas or electric utility experience preferred, with gas utility experience highly desirable.
- Experience supporting engineering and/or construction projects from planning and design through construction and closeout.
- Working knowledge of project management fundamentals, including scope, schedule, cost, risk, change management, and project controls.
- Experience coordinating with engineering, construction, contractors, vendors, project controls, and client stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, assignments, and deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to effectively participate in and, when appropriate, lead project coordination meetings.
- Demonstrated ability to take initiative, exercise sound judgment, resolve issues, and follow through on commitments.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
- Familiarity with project scheduling, cost management, and document management systems is preferred.
- Ability and willingness to travel to client offices, facilities, and active project/construction sites as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with natural gas utility infrastructure, including gas transmission, distribution, pipelines, stations, and facilities.
- Experience with LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) and/or CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) facilities, infrastructure, equipment, or capital projects is a plus.
- Experience with gas compression, pressure regulation, metering, storage, or related gas infrastructure is desirable.
- Experience with electric transmission, distribution, or substation projects is also beneficial.
- Previous experience working directly with a regulated utility.
- Xcel Energy project or program experience is a strong plus.
- Experience with EPC, engineering consulting, construction management, or utility capital improvement programs.
- Familiarity with the complete utility project lifecycle, including project development, engineering, permitting, procurement, construction, commissioning, turnover, and closeout.
- CAPM, PMP, EIT, or another relevant professional certification is a plus.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Business, or a related discipline is preferred.
- Equivalent relevant experience in the utility, natural gas, LNG/CNG, engineering, construction, or project management industries may be considered in lieu of a degree.

The base salary range for this position is $107,800.00 to $141,450.00. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
