KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Well organized, able to work under tight deadlines
- Ability to keep calendars (editorial, events, meetings, etc.) and media lists
- Understands standard media and communication practices, policies and procedures
- Undertakes general administrative and clerical duties
- Employs correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
- Knowledge of applicable laws, codes, regulations, policies and procedures
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
- Technology savvy knowledge of computer operations, personal devices and applications/computer programs
- Strong critical thinking skills and attention to detail
- Experience with practical methods of graphic design, photography and video production
EDUCATION AND TRAINING:
- Bachelor''s degree in journalism, communications, public relations, or related field.
- Five (5) years of experience in the administration of communications, journalism, public relations, or related discipline.
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months
SALARY: Pay grade 68
FLSA Status: Exempt
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitoring internal and external communications for the district.
- Acting as a liaison between schools and media outlets.
- Adhering to Federal, State, and Local policies.
- Planning, researching, writing, and editing news and feature articles for inclusion in various district and external news publications (in both digital and print formats).
- Developing, writing, and editing press releases, brochures, annual reports, direct mail content, supplemental materials such as biographies, presentations, talking points, and other communications and newsletters in support of the Board of Education and District initiatives and goals.
- Assisting the CCO as the primary point of contact for public records requests, in accordance with School Board Policies and NC Public Records Law, directing requests to appropriate departments and following up to ensure timely fulfillment.
- Assisting in managing media inquiries and interview requests. Cultivating and maintaining strong relationships with members of the media, stakeholders, District leaders, and staff.
- Writing and creating invitations, announcements, event programs, and other district event materials in both digital and printed formats for special events, initiatives, and ongoing programs.
- Assisting in organizing and executing events, programs, and other meetings, as assigned.
- Drafting web-based messaging materials for the District website and social media channels, in cooperation with Community Affairs team members, including creating, scheduling, and publishing content on Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter).
- Building strong relations with community business partners and administering the B.A.S.E.S. appreciation program awards and event.
- Assisting in ensuring all communications produced adhere to District brand and style guidelines.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to stand, sit, or walk for prolonged periods of time.
- Ability to reach with hands and arms routinely.
- Ability to bend, stoop, carry, push, or pull.
- Ability to operate technology for prolonged periods of time.
- Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds.
- Must be able to visually and auditorily effectively communicate with staff and students.
- Must be able to drive to a variety of school sites.
