Job Description

Fabrication Assistant QCI

Catch It Early. Protect the Standard. Stand Behind the Work.

Are you the person who notices when something isn't right and takes the time to verify it before it becomes a bigger problem?

Do you have hands-on steel fabrication experience and want to use that knowledge to help ensure every part and assembly leaving the shop meets the requirements?

If so, we're looking for our next Fabrication Assistant Quality Control Inspector (QCI) to join the High Plains Steel Services team.

As a Fabrication Assistant QCI, you'll work as a full-time member of our Quality team, supporting the QCI by performing and documenting fit-up and final inspections of fabricated steel. You'll verify work against drawings, applicable requirements, and our Quality and Safety Management System (QSMS), identify and document nonconforming work, and work with Production to correct issues before they travel downstream.

Why Join Our Team?

At High Plains Steel Services, quality isn't something we check at the end. It's something we protect throughout the fabrication process.

Our Quality team plays an important role in making sure the steel we produce is built correctly, documented accurately, and ready to represent the High Plains name when it leaves our shop.

Here's what you can expect:

  • Quality That Matters - Your inspections directly impact the finished product.
  • Hands-On Work - This isn't a desk-only quality position. You'll be in the shop inspecting actual fabricated steel.
  • Production & Quality Working Together - The goal isn't to stop Production; it's to help Production get the work right.
  • Technical Growth - Continue developing your knowledge of drawings, fabrication requirements, AISC/AWS practices, inspection, and quality systems.
  • Ownership & Accountability - You'll have the responsibility to identify issues, document them accurately, and make sure uncertainty doesn't move downstream.
  • A Team That Stands Behind the Work - We care about what leaves our shop and the name attached to it.

If that sounds like the kind of responsibility you want to take on, keep reading.

This Job Isn't for You If

Quality inspection requires consistency and the willingness to speak up when something doesn't meet the requirement. Please don't apply if you:

  • Assume work is correct instead of inspecting what's actually there.
  • Let production schedules change your acceptance standard.
  • Are uncomfortable identifying or communicating deficiencies.
  • Would sign off on questionable work just to keep material moving.
  • Guess when a drawing, code, or inspection requirement is unclear.
  • Put off inspection documentation until later.
  • Apply different quality standards depending on the employee or situation.
  • See Quality and Production as opposing teams rather than partners.
  • Ignore an unsafe condition because it isn't directly related to your inspection.

Who We're Looking For

To thrive as a Fabrication Assistant QCI, you need to be:

  • Detail-Oriented - Small fabrication issues can become big problems downstream. You pay attention to what others may miss.
  • Consistent - The quality standard stays the same regardless of who performed the work or how tight the schedule is.
  • Confident Communicator - You can clearly explain what you found, what needs to be corrected, and when you need help from the QCI.
  • Production-Minded - You understand that quality and production are not competing priorities. You help get deficiencies corrected efficiently so work can continue.
  • Accountable - Your inspection records clearly show what was checked and what happened when work didn't conform.
  • Safety-Focused - You pay attention to safe work while performing quality activities and address or escalate concerns when you see them.
  • Willing to Learn - You know when to verify a requirement or escalate a question rather than guessing.

What You'll Be Doing as Our Fabrication Assistant QCI

Inspect Fabricated Steel

Perform and document fit-up and final inspections of fabricated parts and assemblies. Apply applicable AISC and AWS codes and practices, project documents, company procedures, drawings, and inspection criteria when determining whether work meets requirements.

Identify & Document Nonconformance

When something doesn't meet the requirement, you'll document and report the nonconformance through the QSMS. You'll also help maintain inspection records, quality logs, equipment certifications, and other documentation so inspection history remains accurate and traceable.

Work With Production to Correct Issues

Quality and Production have the same end goal: delivering a quality product safely, on time, and under budget. You'll communicate inspection findings, help Production understand required corrections, and escalate unresolved issues to the QCI.

Keep Quality Ready

Support the QCI in keeping inspection equipment, certifications, records, and documentation current, organized, and ready for use. You'll also verify required QSMS training for inspected work and assist with additional quality-control activities as directed by the QCI.

Qualifications

To succeed in this role, you need:

  • At least 2 years of steel fabrication experience.
  • Operational knowledge of AISC and AWS codes and practices for steel fabrication.
  • Strong experience and knowledge in fabrication production, quality, and safety.
  • Ability to read and apply fabrication drawings and inspection requirements.
  • Technical ability to use company technology required for inspection and quality documentation.
  • Ability to clearly document and communicate inspection findings.
  • Ability to pass a Visual Acuity Test.
  • Legal eligibility to work in the United States.

Pay & Benefits

We care about the time and responsibility you put into your work, and we show that by offering:

  • Competitive hourly pay based on experience and qualifications.
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance.
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match.
  • Paid time off.
  • Consistent, stable work.
  • Training and development opportunities.
  • Opportunities to continue building your technical knowledge of steel fabrication and quality control.
  • A strong safety culture where your well-being matters.

At High Plains Steel Services, Give a Damn, Build Trust, and Stand Behind the Work aren't just words. In Quality, they mean checking the work, applying the standard consistently, documenting what you find, and speaking up when something isn't right.

If you're ready to use your fabrication experience to help protect the quality of everything that leaves our shop, we want to hear from you.

APPLY TODAY to join the High Plains Steel Services team and help us build work we're proud to stand behind.
