General Summary: Responsible for prosecuting files assigned to the Assistant State"s Attorney. The ASA will prepare court documents, interview police officers and civilian witnesses, research legal issues, prepare trial exhibits, conduct hearings and trials as needed on each file. Participate in meetings and task force duties as assigned by the State"s Attorney.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Uphold the laws, Illinois Constitution and U.S. Constitution
- Review police reports for filing of indictments/complaints
- Prepare court documents for filing on each case
- Answer Discovery on each file
- Prepare each file for hearing or trial
- Interview witnesses
- Review case files with supervisor
- Research legal issues and prepare arguments for each case
- Prepare files for each court call
- Attend training as out lined by the State"s Attorney
- Attend meetings as requested by State"s Attorney
- Other responsibilities as assigned by the State"s Attorney
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Juris Doctor and valid Illinois Law License at all times.
- Understanding of the Illinois Criminal and Civil codes as they apply to their assignments.
- Must understand and follow the Rules of Professional Conduct.
- Ensures confidentiality and privacy at all times.
- The ability to handle high volume court calls.
- Is open to new ideas and changes; encourages others to do the same.
- Willingly flexes to meet changing workload demands and priorities.
- Treats others with courtesy and respect in all interactions.
- Must establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the judiciary and defense bar.
- Works cooperatively with other employees to complete the work.
- Displays punctuality in all activities such as work attendance, project deadlines, and reports.
- Must have a valid Illinois driver"s license.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Sitting, talking, hearing and vision are required approximately 100% of the time.
- Standing, walking, keying and reaching are required approximately 50% of the time.
- The ability to speak loud and clear so listeners can understand.
- Lifting files and books up to 20 lbs. required 10% of the time.
