Job Description:

Reports To: Superintendent of Schools

Work Year: 12 Months

Position Summary

The Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations serves as the district's chief financial and operational leader and is responsible for the strategic planning, management, and oversight of Stratford Public Schools' financial systems and operational services. This position ensures responsible stewardship of public resources while supporting the district's mission of providing high-quality educational opportunities for all students.

The Assistant Superintendent oversees all financial operations, facilities management, capital planning, transportation services, food services, and operational support systems. This role works closely with the Superintendent, Board of Education, municipal officials, and school administrators to ensure efficient operations, long-term fiscal sustainability, and safe learning environments.

Essential Responsibilities

Financial Leadership

  • Develop and manage the district's annual operating budget in collaboration with the Superintendent and district leadership team.
  • Provide financial forecasts, long-range fiscal planning, and budget projections.
  • Monitor district expenditures and revenue to ensure fiscal responsibility and compliance with Board policies and state regulations.
  • Oversee all accounting functions including payroll, purchasing, grants management, and financial reporting.
  • Prepare and present financial reports to the Board of Education, municipal leadership, and community stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial regulations.

Operational Leadership

  • Provide leadership and oversight for district operational departments including:

  • Facilities and maintenance

  • Transportation services

  • Food service programs

  • Capital improvement projects

  • Operational safety coordination

  • Oversee maintenance and improvement of district buildings and grounds to ensure safe and efficient learning environments.

  • Collaborate with municipal partners on shared services and facility-related initiatives.

Capital Planning & Facilities Management

  • Lead the development and implementation of the district's Capital Improvement Plan.
  • Coordinate long-range facilities planning, including renovation and construction projects.
  • Supervise facilities leadership and ensure effective maintenance operations.
  • Work closely with town officials and external contractors on facility projects.

Strategic & Administrative Leadership

  • Serve as a member of the Superintendent's Cabinet and contribute to district strategic planning.
  • Provide leadership in operational efficiency and resource allocation.
  • Evaluation of of district administrators as assigned by superintendent
  • Support school leaders in operational planning and problem-solving.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and systems to ensure efficient district operations.
  • Participate in negotiations and operational planning related to district initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Educational Leadership, Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, or related field.
  • Candidates must possess State of Connecticut certification - School Business Administration (085) -eligibility for CT Intermediate Administrator (092) preferred
  • Minimum of five years of leadership experience in school finance, business administration, or district operations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of public school budgeting, facilities management, and operational systems.
  • Experience working with municipal government and public budgeting processes preferred.
