An Overview
An Assistant Superintendent provides supervision to a group of Laborers and/or Equipment Operators engaged in the city's municipal solid waste collection activities and related work. An employee in this class collaborates in leading and motivating the refuse team by example daily. You will enforce city standards related to safety, customer service, productivity, and compliance are met daily within the refuse collection. This position directly reports to the Refuse Superintendent that assigns areas of work and standards, as well as reviews the quality of work performed.

Minimum & Additional Requirements
The Ideal Candidate
To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess Five (5) years of experience as an Equipment Operator II or Heavy Equipment Operator in refuse collection and disposal maintenance or street cleaning and completion of high school courses or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
The person selected for this role must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the proper endorsement for the vehicle being driven within three (3) months of appointment.
Preferred Qualifications
To be considered as an ideal candidate, applicants should possess an Associate's degree and four (4) years of experience in residential refuse collection, recycling, bulk collection, street cleaning, or related solid waste operations, including three (3) years of lead supervisory experience. Preferred qualifications include experience with solid waste routing and route optimization, AVL/GPS systems, supervising unionized field crews, coordinating fleet and refuse vehicle operations, handling employee and customer service matters, and maintaining safety and operational compliance within field collection environments. Candidates should also demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills, strong follow-up and organizational abilities, and a proactive problem-solving mindset with the ability to independently address operational challenges, staffing needs, route issues, and service interruptions in a fast-paced solid waste environment.
