Summary:

Under the direction of the Catering Manager, this position provides support for the successful execution of the catering function within the Dining Services department. This position will follow through with food preparation and room set ups to ensure the timeliness of all meals and that sanitation and safety standards are exceeded. This person will be responsible for coordinating numerous catering functions in both the front of the house and in the back of the house on a daily basis.  To ensure exceptional service is met for students, faculty, staff and the entire Skidmore community, they will be required to manage and oversee hourly employees who are responsible for events.  When catering responsibilities are not required, they will support all other dining service operations. 

This position requires flexibility in schedule as evening or weekend work will be required. Scheduling is managed across the Catering team. This is a salaried (exempt) position which averages 40 hours per week.

Primary Job Duties:

  1. Oversees the set-up, service and breakdown of catering events both on campus and off campus by coordinating all aspects of events, including communicating event needs and logistics with members of the Dining Services management team.
  2. Participates in and supervises food production, service and sanitation for catering events, assuring food quality, presentation and service standards meet Dining Services and customers’ expectations. Must be able to direct and relay to staff and management customer expectations.
  3. Supervises hourly employees and provides leadership/task coordination to staff assigned to the event. This includes assigning job duties for various employees at various events. Ensures that New York State Health Codes are properly adhered to with regard to food temperatures, cross-contamination, service and storage of all food items.
  4. Evaluates client needs, coordinates catering event details and responds to client requests in a professional and timely manner, as needed.
  5. Assists the Catering Manager with menu development, event billing, posting of catering sheets and filling out of work orders for all events. 
  6. Assists with special themed dinners in the dining hall throughout the academic year.
  7. Assists with the development of catering staff. This will include working with members of the Dining Services management team to ensure all staff are meeting the departmental requirements as identified in the Collective Bargaining Agreement and departmental policies. Monitors staff work habits and assists them in developing safe practices. 
  8. Promotes excellent customer service at all times by demonstrating exemplary behavior, taking care of customer needs and welcoming and connecting with every customer. Executes on customer change requests in an organized and detailed manner.
  9. Circulates event sheets to appropriate locations and updates as needed. Communicates with the bake shop, catering chefs, receiving staff and Dining Services Managers overseeing the catering events as needed. This includes assisting, as needed, with processing work orders for catering events, dining hall and retail set ups as needed.
  10. Support all Dining Services location. Assist other Assistant Supervisors to help maintain overall appearance of all dining operations. Ensuring that stations and locations are staffed and adequately supplied and maintained during operations.

Qualifications:

Education: An Associate’s Degree in hospitality management, culinary, hotel restaurant management, or business with experience in food operations, OR a High School Diploma with two years’ experience in food service operations.

Experience:

  • Must understand the importance of excellent customer service and cost controls.
    • College / University Food Service Management experience is preferred.
    • TIPS Certification required within first year of employment.
    • Serv-Safe/ HACCP certification required within first year of employment.
    • Anti-harassment workshop attendance is required within first year of employment.
    • Strong customer service skills, excellent communication, strong organizational skills, creativity and excellent time management will be required. Training of all hourly employees will be required.
    • Attention to detail, strong leadership and interpersonal skills, flexible schedule (nights and weekends), and experience working with Unions is preferred.
    • Knowledge of food presentation and preparation, knowledge of health, safety and alcohol codes are needed.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication and strong interpersonal skills are required.

Salary: $63,000 + generous benefits
