The University of Washington, School of Social Work invites applications for two (2) Full-Time Assistant Teaching Professors in the Child Welfare Training and Advancement Program (CWTAP), effective no later than September 16, 2026. Assistant TeachingProfessor positions are promotable, non-tenurable, and voting eligible. These full-time positions are eligible for multi-year appointments, 1 to 5 years, and are renewable. They have a 9-month service period, September 16 through June 15 annually, with up to 2.5 paid months of summer salary based onprogram, curricular and administrative needs. The base salary range for these positions will be $8000 to $9130 per month, commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination. The position is not eligible for remote work.
Teaching Professors at the University of Washington play a central role in fulfilling the institution's educational mission. They design, deliver, and assess instruction across undergraduate and graduate programs, directly supporting student learning and academic success. Specifically, Assistant Teaching Professors in the Child Welfare Training and Advancement Program (CWTAP) support the educational operations of CWTAP. The role provides direct supervision and instruction for a unit of CWTAP participants in their field placement at the designated office of the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF). Faculty provide graduate and undergraduate level social work education and practice experience for public child welfare employees and prospective employees through collaboration with the UW Social Work Program and DCYF. These faculty ensure the development of professional social work skills in students committed to post-MSW service in public child welfare. CWTAP faculty participate in the School's shared governance and provide leadership for collaborative curriculum, program development, and other initiatives.
As Teaching Professors in the CWTAP, these faculty focus their work commitments, duties, and responsibilities on classroom teaching and teaching relevant to field education in CWTAP as a core activity and expectation.
Specific duties include:
1. Adhering to and Acting Upon Values and Mission of the SSW, the Office of Field Education (OFE) and CWTAP
Perform instructional and advising responsibilities in ways that are effective for students with varied educational histories, identities, and lived experiences.
Engage in personal reflection, implementation, and integration of inclusive, ethically grounded social work practice throughout teaching and work with students, DCYF, and field instructors.
Effectively relate to a variety of constituencies, including students, faculty, practicum sites, community groups, and alumni as they impact each group's interests and concerns related to field education.
Leverage expertise in social work frameworks that address structural barriers and experience working with community agencies, government programs, or practicum sites
2. Teaching CWTAP-Field Education-Related Content
Actively and purposefully engage in the integration of in-person and online field and classroom learning with the BASW and MSW degree programs and other student services
Provide high-quality educational opportunities for students, including teaching field-specific courses, seminars, and field-related workshops.
Participate in the development, design, coordination, and delivery/teaching of field education curriculum for students
Develop modalities to center the integration of classroom learning and practice experience in the field, in collaboration with classroom and field faculty
3. Supporting Students
Have in-depth knowledge of the BASW and MSW curricula as integrated with field education and CWTAP.
Provide advising, mentorship, educational needs assessment, and integration of student learning in the field and classroom for students
Assess and identify student educational needs and career goals with appropriate field placements to meet those needs for students.
Ensure the timely completion of practicum requirements, including plan development, evaluation of student field learning outcomes, Learning Contracts, and other requirements, as well as updates of practicum site information.
Provide ongoing, timely support, mentorship, and ongoing communication to students
Manage, coordinate, and assess efficacy of student and practicum placements as accessed through a School-wide, computer database for field education
Provide educational and professional career advising for students related to their field education experience
4. CWTAP Practicum Site and DCYF Field Instructor Engagement
Assist in the recruitment, identification, and capacity-building of new and current CWTAP practicum sites
Advise and assist DCYF in the development of a field education program for students in placement
Conduct regular site visits at DCYF with students in practicum placements
Provide ongoing, timely support, mentorship, and ongoing communication to field instructors and practicum sites
Provide high-quality educational and professional development opportunities for DCYF Field Instructors and practicum sites, including teaching field-specific courses, seminars, workshops, and conference presentations relevant to the educational mission of the field/practicum experience
Field instructor support, advising, orientation, liaison, training, and integration of learning objectives in field and classroom
Engage in, support, and mediate relationships with students, practicum sites, and DCYF field instructors through a formal liaison function
Encourage and engage DCYF Field Instructors and practicum sites to participate in the Field Education Advisory Council
Document Title IV E case forms, meetings and correspondence
5. Collaborating with SSW Colleagues and Programs
Actively and positively collaborate as a team member in CWTAP and Office of Field Education governance, program development, curricular initiatives, and other activities
Work closely and collaboratively with BASW and MSW programs to ensure integration of field education and course curriculum requirements
Engage in School of Social Work governance, program development, curricular and other initiatives (as required of all faculty)
Engage in and actively participate in UW governance and other initiatives relevant to field education and social work
Actively participate in faculty meetings and School of Social Work Committees
Seek out and initiate projects, programs, and activities relevant to CWTAP field education and the Field Faculty role
Collaborate with CWTAP programs at UW Tacoma and Eastern Washington University
6. Engaging in Scholarly Work
Engage in scholarship and contribute to knowledge specifically relevant to CWTAP field education in social work through activities such as the following examples:
development of new courses, curricula, course materials or methods relevant to CWTAP field education
develop written manuscripts, blogs, multi-media materials, or other work for dissemination focused on innovations or research on field education
participation in professional conferences, presenting workshops or papers on field education
contributions to interdisciplinary teaching relevant to field education
participation and leadership in professional associations representing or relevant to field education
presentations to agencies, students, or community groups regarding field education and social work
7. Engaging with Communities:
Participate in community initiatives and community-based activities relevant to inclusive social work practice/advocacy, field education, and professional social work
8. Other Required Duties:
This position will be expected to work daily with computerized data management systems and information technology, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other communication software
Field Faculty are expected to meet with students, practicum sites, and field instructors, in person and remotely, including some evening and weekend work throughout Washington State, including need for travel.
Complete other duties as necessary, as requested by the Director of CWTAP
Positive factors for consideration include, but are not limited to:
LICSW or other licensure or certifications relevant to the position
Experience as a supervisor or program manager within DCYF
Experience as a field/practicum instructor, supervising MSW or BSW students as interns, volunteers, or in other training capacities
Qualifications:
MSW from CSWE accredited program or foreign equivalent
Five years of full-time post-MSW practice experience in public child welfare
Evidence of exemplary record of teaching, training, scholarly engagement, research, and practice in field education, social work, and/or related discipline
