Bismarck State College is seeking an innovative and industry-connected Assistant Teaching Professor of Plumbing to play a pivotal role in launching our new Plumbing Program. What Youll Do

You will be responsible for delivering high-quality classroom and hands-on training, supporting student success, maintaining accurate student and program records, supporting program improvement, and promoting Bismarck State College's mission, initiatives, and organizational goals. The instructor also provides administrative support as required and participates in planning and coordinating student activities, program events, and industry-related learning opportunities.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Deliver classroom, laboratory, and hands-on instruction in plumbing systems, installation, service, safety, and industry practices.
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve curriculum to align with industry standards, workforce needs, and licensing requirements.
  • Coordinate and maintain plumbing laboratories, tools, equipment, materials, and instructional resources.
  • Ensure safe operation of laboratory and shop environments, including compliance with applicable safety standards and equipment inspections.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with industry employers, advisory board members, apprenticeship organizations, and workforce partners to support program quality and student success.
  • Coordinate experiential learning opportunities, including internships, industry tours, guest speakers, and employer engagement activities.
  • Support student recruitment, program promotion, and community outreach efforts.
  • Maintain current technical expertise through professional development, industry certifications, and engagement with the plumbing profession.
  • Participate in program assessment, continuous improvement, and accreditation or compliance activities as applicable.
  • Support the development and operation of specialized instructional spaces, including plumbing simulation and laboratory environments.

Required Qualifications

  • Current North Dakota Journeyman Plumber license or Master Plumber License, or the ability to obtain North Dakota Licensure within a specified timeframe if licensed in another state

  • Minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible industry experience in residential, commercial, industrial, or service plumbing, preferable in North Dakota or a state with plumbing licensure reciprocity recognized by North Dakota.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of:

  • North Dakota plumbing code

  • Plumbing system design, installation, maintenance, and repair

  • Blueprint reading and interpretation

  • Plumbing safety practices and OSHA standards

  • Industry-standard tools, equipment, and materials

  • Ability to effectively communicate technical concepts and work with students from diverse backgrounds

  • Commitment to maintaining current industry knowledge and technical competencies

  • Willingness to complete North Dakota Department of Career and Technical Education (NDCTE)

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Good computer software skills - Microsoft Office Suite, Word, PowerPoint

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • North Dakota Master Plumber license

  • Ten (10) or more years of progressively responsible plumbing industry experience in North Dakota or a state with plumbing licensure reciprocity recognized by North Dakota

  • Experience supervising apprentices, leading crews, or managing plumbing projects

  • Previous teaching, apprenticeship instruction, workforce training, or mentoring experience

  • Curriculum development experience

  • Experience with:

  • Commercial plumbing systems

  • Hydronic heating systems

  • Medical gas systems

  • Backflow prevention and testing

  • Green plumbing technologies and water conservation systems

  • OSHA 30 Certification or other relevant industry certifications (e.g. NCCER Instructor Certification, First Aid/CPR)

  • Experience using construction technology, digital estimating, scheduling, or project management software

  • Bachelors degree

Compensation & Benefits

Nine-month plus six weeks, full-time, non-tenure track, special appointment position.

Minimum starting salary based on experience and education:

Associates Degree: 9-month + 6-weeks: $56,594-$70,742

Bachlerors Degree: 9 months + 6 weeks: $58,454-$73,067
