WORK SCHEDULE: Seasonal - Spring Athletic Season

Position Summary

The Assistant Track Coach is responsible for assisting the Head Track Coach in developing and maintaining a successful track and field program that promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, and academic achievement. The Assistant Coach will help provide instruction in the fundamentals and advanced techniques of track and field while ensuring a safe, positive, and inclusive environment for all student-athletes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Head Coach with planning, organizing, and conducting daily practices.
  • Instruct student-athletes in the rules, fundamentals, techniques, and strategies of track and field events.
  • Help supervise athletes during practices, meets, team travel, and other team activities.
  • Foster a positive team culture that emphasizes respect, sportsmanship, accountability, and personal growth.
  • Encourage academic success and model appropriate behavior consistent with Greenwood Community School Corporation expectations.
  • Assist with conditioning, skill development, and event-specific training programs.
  • Monitor athlete safety and ensure proper use of equipment and facilities.
  • Assist in preparing athletes and equipment for home and away competitions.
  • Help maintain accurate equipment inventories and report equipment needs to the Head Coach.
  • Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, coaching staff, school administration, and officials.
  • Support compliance with all Greenwood Community School Corporation policies, Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) rules, and conference regulations.
  • Attend coaches meetings, professional development opportunities, and required athletic department meetings.
  • Assist with off-season conditioning opportunities as approved by the Athletic Department.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous coaching experience or participation in track and field preferred.
  • Knowledge of track and field events, training methods, and competition rules.
  • Ability to motivate and positively mentor student-athletes.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with coaching staff, administration, parents, and community members.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
  • Must successfully complete all required IHSAA, Greenwood Community School Corporation, and state coaching requirements, including background checks and required certifications.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to demonstrate athletic skills and techniques.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to travel with the team to competitions.

Work Environment

The Assistant Track Coach works primarily outdoors during the spring athletic season and may be exposed to varying weather conditions. Evening and weekend hours are required for practices, competitions, and team events.
