Job Description:

As an Assistant Transportation Engineer in the field, you will be performing a variety of moderately complex engineering functions in support of construction and maintenance of public works structures, systems, and facilities and transportation engineering. The incumbent is responsible for the inspection and documentation of work performed by private contractors on bridge projects and field testing of materials such as concrete and pavement.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Interpreting the plans and specifications that relate to the project,
  • Performing inspection and measurement of the work,
  • Record-keeping on, and testing of, the materials used by the contractor, and,
  • Performing other selected tasks related to projects.

The incumbent may act as a Resident Inspector on selected projects and will be introduced to project management principles and advanced technical engineering duties. Other duties may involve assisting in the development of projects doing design, plan development, and quantity and cost estimating. The ability to travel statewide for overnight and extended stays is required.

To be minimally qualified for this position candidates must provide evidence of the following experience:

A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or closely related field -OR- non-engineering college graduates and non-degreed candidates must possess a Certification of Engineer-Intern as issued by the State Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers.

Licensing/Registration/Certification Requirements: (These must be met by all employees prior to attaining permanent status in this class).

Non-degreed candidates must possess Certification as Engineer Intern issued by the Maine State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
