Overview The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon is seeking experienced attorneys to serve as Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) in the Civil Division. These positions are located in Portland, Oregon. AUSAs work on a variety of challenging litigation matters and are supported by colleagues of the highest caliber.Responsibilities Represent the United States and federal agencies in a variety of civil matters, including employment, tort, medical malpractice, constitutional claims and civil rights, FOIA, APA matters, False Claims Act, and financial litigation.Defend government agencies and handle certain affirmative litigation where the government is the plaintiff.Engage in case development, including gathering information and evidence with government agencies, conducting civil investigations, and engaging in motion practice and oral argument.Take and defend depositions, prepare and respond to written discovery, negotiate settlements, and prepare cases for trial.Try cases and brief and argue appeals at trial and appellate levels.Litigate a mix of civil defensive cases as well as affirmative civil enforcement, affirmative civil rights, and bankruptcy matters (e.g., medical malpractice, personal injury, employment discrimination, immigration and Bureau of Prisons habeas actions, APA challenges, FOIA suits, and Bivens actions).Handle False Claims Act (Qui Tam) investigations and whistleblower actions; represent creditors in Chapter 7, 11, and 13 bankruptcies where applicable.Training and Professional Development Grow professionally with mentorship and DOJ training resources, including opportunities to attend seminars at the DOJ's National Advocacy Center in Columbia, South Carolina.The complexity of cases will increase with experience and demonstrated confidence.Security, Residency, and Compliance Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing; continued employment is subject to a favorable background investigation.Residency generally required in the district or within 25 miles thereof.Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must be registered with the Selective Service System or be exempt.Compliance with conflicts of interest rules; notify the Office of any existing representations or family relationships that may present a conflict.Qualifications Required: J.D. degree and active bar membership (any U.S. jurisdiction); United States citizenship.Residence in the district to be appointed or within 25 miles of the district.Selective Service registration as applicable.Preferred Qualifications Ability to manage numerous ongoing litigation matters, including court appearances, depositions, and discovery deadlines, in a collegial, professional manner.Experience appearing in court, arbitrations, and/or depositions; trial experience preferred.Strong research and writing abilities; ability to prepare high-quality pleadings; experience handling litigation from filing through discovery and dispositive motions.Judgment, independence, and the ability to work with supervisory input when needed.Other Information Salary range: $79,667 to $197,100, including locality pay.Federal benefits package applicable; relocation expenses are not authorized.Travel within and outside the District may be required; review professional conduct rules and potential conflicts of interest with the Office as applicable.Equitable and non-discriminatory employment policies (EEO) apply; the U.S. government does not discriminate in employment on protected characteristics.Note: This vacancy announcement contains other standard information about eligibility and benefits.
