Assistant Wrestling Coach

The University of Lynchburg, a private, regional university in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Central Virginia, is seeking applicants for a full-time, Assistant wrestling coach.

This position reports to, is supervised by, and evaluated by the Head Wrestling Coach. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior.

Job Type: Full Time

Job Purpose: The full time Wrestling assistant coach provides support and leadership in all aspects of developing highly successful programs primarily focused on instruction and mentorship for student athletes. The Wrestling assistant is expected to be fully integrated into the life of the program, the athletics department and university mission. The position is an avenue to empower and build lives through the avenue of college athletics.

Specific Job Duties:

Practice Planning and Team Operations

  • Collaborate with the Head Coach to plan, organize, and implement team practices.
  • Plan and conduct individual and position-specific practices as assigned by the Head Coach.
  • Prepare and set up equipment for individual and team practice sessions.
  • Provide individualized, skill-specific instruction and constructive feedback during practices and competitions.
  • Deliver group instruction and performance feedback to athletes.
  • Evaluate team performance and identify strengths, areas for improvement, and future training priorities.
  • Coordinate strength and conditioning activities with the Strength and Conditioning staff.
  • Assist in maintaining the team's social media presence by highlighting team accomplishments, activities, and culture.
  • Prepare opponent scouting reports, performance analyses, and event standards as assigned.

Competition Responsibilities

  • Coordinate assigned competition logistics, including travel arrangements, meals, lodging, and team itineraries.
  • Take an active leadership role during warm-ups and pre-competition preparation.
  • Provide technical instruction, strategic adjustments, and performance feedback throughout competitions.
  • Encourage and motivate student-athletes through consistent positive reinforcement and effective communication.
  • Assist the Head Coach with in-meet operations and athlete management.

Non-Traditional Season Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and monitor offseason strength and conditioning programs in collaboration with the Strength and Conditioning staff.
  • Conduct equipment setup, maintenance, and inventory.
  • Manage the distribution, collection, and inventory of team equipment and apparel.
  • Schedule and organize individual athlete meetings.
  • Assist in preparing seasonal schedules and travel plans.
  • Coordinate required departmental paperwork, certifications, and compliance documentation.
  • Obtain and maintain institutional driver authorization as required.

Annual Administrative Responsibilities

  • Plan and coordinate team special events and community service initiatives.
  • Arrange and coordinate overnight recruiting visits.
  • Prepare and distribute communications to student-athletes, families, alumni, and supporters.
  • Manage the distribution, collection, cleaning, and inventory of team uniforms.
  • Coordinate the selection, ordering, and distribution of team apparel.
  • Assist in planning and executing official visit days and other recruiting events.

Recruiting Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain proficiency in the institution's recruiting database and software.

  • Maintain accurate records of prospective student-athletes, including:

  • Prospective recruits.

  • Accepted students.

  • Campus visitors.

  • Recruiting correspondence.

  • Respond promptly to communications from prospective student-athletes, families, coaches, and recruiting contacts.

  • Identify, evaluate, and prioritize prospective student-athletes.

  • Monitor recruit profiles and athletic development throughout the recruiting process.

  • Communicate regularly with prospective student-athletes regarding campus events, recruiting opportunities, and program updates.

  • Participate in Open House and other university recruiting events.

  • Meet with prospective student-athletes and their families during campus visits.

  • Conduct campus tours for recruits and their families as assigned.

  • Attend showcases, tournaments, competitions, and prospective student-athlete events throughout the year to evaluate talent and represent the program.

Professional Expectations

  • Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, and leadership in all interactions.
  • Represent the athletic program and institution in a positive manner at all times.
  • Maintain compliance with all institutional, conference, and governing body policies and regulations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Administration.

Budget Administration

  • Work with the Head coach to prepare an annual budget as directed by the Director of Athletics.
  • Maintain accurate records for expenses and honor budget limits.
  • Responsible for reasonable and timely selection, ordering and maintaining uniforms, equipment and supplies appropriate for the sport and within budget constraints.

Build External Relationships

  • Nurture relationships with alumni and potential donors and families to include regular communications, in person opportunities and digital communications.
  • Work to enhance the profile of Lynchburg Women's Basketball in the greater wrestling community.

Other Duties

  • The Director of Athletics may assign other duties.
  • Responsibility for maintaining a commitment to a diverse and inclusive department that is committed to Title IX compliance by all staff and students.

Starting Salary: $38,000

Experience/Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and have the ability to understand, comprehend and follow directions
  • Must have good teamwork skills

Physical Demands:

  • Prolonged standing/setting/wrist movement
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelors degree and successful coaching background

Preferred qualifications:

  • Masters degree and collegiate playing or coaching experience in a successful program
